2001 with trans controller out

I was looking at ads for diesels and I came across a 2001, 4wd, 3500, single rear wheel, 151k miles, locking diff, ranch hand front bumper, with automatic trans for 3500.00. The guy says you can shift the gears and it will do just fine and the controller box is out. I am a ford guy and deal with (E4 Oh Damnit it's out again), so I am not sure about the dodge trans. How bad are these trans and is this a realistic problem that would just need another control box, fuse, or something else similar? What odd things would it take to swap a manual into one of these trucks? Thanks for the help.

the original 47RE trans in the 01 is terrible in my opinion. I would swap it out completely if it is still the original tranny. Not sure of the problem he described, but you can pick up a new performance transmission that will last a LONG time for under 5k.

I cannot speak from experience on what it would take to convert it to manual, but i dont think it is unheard of.

The TCM isnt in the trans. It's part of the PCM (powertrain control module)

Thanks. I figured it was a internal trans problem but wasn't sure. I think I am going to pass on getting it. Sounds to good to be true it probably is.
