53 series block

my friend ownes a 2001 cummins thought he had a decent block started to tare down and found a small crack in the block with stop leak in it. need some opinions on what to do now it has 140k on it????:humm:

This is a common problem and the only real fix is replacing the block. Drill a small hole on each end of the crack to stop it from spreading.

Theres some excellent info here including pics of my #53:

A good welder can weld it for him. But you have to know what youre doing to weld cast iron.

will all 53 blocks crack eventually or just part of them?

Dr. Evil 08-19-2009 09:38 PM

No they wont all crack. Only a small percentage (I hope).

But prepare yourself for the worst - its CAN happen, especially since many of these enges are getting some serious miles on them.
