advice on getting 02' diesel

I am looking to getting a used 2002 dodge 4x4 ext-cab long bed with about 150,000 miles on it, with diesel of course, but my question is, are these older models always this noisy with dodge models or is there a way to quiet the engine down? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I have only had experience with ford diesels and I really don't remember my 7.3 being that noisy when we had it and especially the newer engines with ford or dodge for that matter. Also is it true that the dodge diesel has a over flow/over pass canister(sorry could not remember what it's called), filter thing, or something in that nature that needs to be drained every time you change the oil, and of course I mean besides the oil filter. This guy told me it leaks from there only when he forgets to drain it after each oil change or is there something else wrong with the truck maybe? Any advice would be appreciated it. :argh:

thats called your blow bye tube you can keep cleaning it or just make a longer hose so that it dumps on the ground, for noise there load for a reason ha ha but i love the noise

SNACKPACK 08-18-2009 11:45 PM

i ran mine to the ground, prolly one of the best mods to this date :U:

as for the noise adding a il 2 stroke to the fuel quiets it a little, but you can still tell it's a cummins. i also love the noise

it should be a great truck but you will need to look at fuel pressure and see how that is. What trans is in it, and if an auto any work been done to it. Adjust the valves and you should be good.

is the 53 block a problem with the 02's?

02 was the best of the 2nd gens, 4 wheel disc, abs, quad cab. The only problem is the fuel supply to the Ip. As far as the noise, that's the best part! Add a quart of 2 stroke oil everytime you fuel and that will really smooth the beast out. There is a small oil catch bottle in front of the engine that needs to be drained every oil change but there are ways to mod that to fix that problem. https://www.dieselbombers.com/5-9l-2...vent-bomb.html

Injectors quieted my 24V down at idle, along with the other mods you could definitely tell at idle it was quieter next to a stock 2nd gen.

If the price is right buy it. Ensure you have good fuel pressure (plan on buying an Airdog 1st thing if it doesn't have one). Extend the breather tube and clean the front of the engine and radiator good. At that mileage a stock auto is close to done too as others have said. Still a great choice of the 24v trucks though. I'm close to 120k on my 01.5 (very similar to 'o2) and still loving it.

this guy is asking $13,000.... what do you think to much or to little....it looks to be in very good shape as far as body(no visible rust which is good for a northern truck)and interior goes. the only thing i saw wrong was the a/c-heater vents through the defrost mode only. what is the common fix for that?:U:

Captain Call 08-21-2009 10:44 PM

13k seems high.

Buckshotmckee 08-21-2009 10:49 PM

I've been looking for a new truck and when I find something I go to KBB and put in info about the truck and get what they think it's worth and go from there.

Is it auto or manual? Did they stop putting the 47RE in the auto's in '02? Ask what he has had to replace so far; that will give you an idea of what you are still in store for when/if you drive off with it. DON'T lead him into the problems you know that exist with the truck until he tells you what he has replaced. If he is a sneaky guy, he will know what you are up to. You can use that as a barganing chip for the final price if he hadnt replaced certian key parts.

Depending on the shape, 13k isn't too bad with 150k miles.
Probably needs a new heater switch.

I have a 2001.5 with 215k on it.

dmac 09-11-2009 10:57 PM

gave 12k for 01 with 110 000. did not know about blow by tube learned something else. Man I love this site:U:

Sweet!

Well, 98% of the 2002 trucks won't have a 53 block but I have seen a couple with them. These are the last of the old casting which although the truck may have a build date of October 2001 the block sat around and was used up.

As far as the Crank Case vent tube be careful with bigger injectors, off roading and short haul start stop conditions as these will make the tube mod or the bottle itself go into a tail spin. It is absolutely imperative that this doesn't plug as it is required to make the monster sing. When I indicate off road it is basically steep down hill action that does that.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Why do you mention bigger injectors? What effect will that have on the blowby tube?

Wyatt Earp 09-16-2009 02:26 PM

Mre fuel from the injection system results in my crank case vapours and therefore more blow by. I'm not a mechanic but that is how I understand it.

With my 150 HP injectors I get lots of blow by.

Marine 09-16-2009 02:34 PM

How many miles do you have on your truck? I don't see how injector size will effect the amount of blowby. Blowby is directly proportionate on how worn the engine is; the escaping of combustion and compression gases past the pistons and piston rings into the crankcase is what makes up Blowby.

Wyatt Earp 09-16-2009 02:46 PM

Well, its the same on every Cummins I've ever worked on. I have 170K on the clock. Piers is the guy that warned me about big sticks but I did it anyway.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Of course its a result of higher compression but my truck burns less than 1 litre of oil in 10,000 km so that isn't a factor.

Marine 09-16-2009 02:58 PM

Did you upgrade your engine components so it runs at higher compression?

Wyatt Earp 09-16-2009 02:59 PM

No, I mean higher compression than say a 3rd or 4th gen and most certainly higher than a gasser.

Marine 09-16-2009 03:00 PM

I gotcha.

Wyatt Earp 09-16-2009 03:06 PM

So you think, which by what I have now read, my rings could be on their way out? I doubt that but anything is possible I guess. The blow by has always done that and when I get lots of stop and go on my truck I get drips and what looks like exhaust gas out of my vent tube extension which is down under the drivers doors. I've been told my 2 OTR truck mechanics that this is 100% completely normal and they both asked if I had bigger sticks in there which I said yes and they both said on seperate occassions that that was the cause. This matched what Piers told me and its been that way now for more than 2 years so, it is what it is. It is not my daily driver anymore anyway.

Marine 09-23-2009 03:37 PM

I would say that the rings are getting worn abit. Mine does the same thing; drips a little more with stop and go driving. I think that would be due to more uneven temperatures compared to highway driving. I have 220K or so on mine.

Mopar Man 09-24-2009 05:44 PM

A Fluidampr will also help quiet it down a bit, At least it did on mine.

The stock Compreshion ratio on these trucks is 16.3:1 on the SO trucks & 17.0:1 on the HO trucks.

A fluiddampr also quiet mine down, and a valve adjustment helped even more.:pca1:

bluecummins 09-25-2009 03:01 PM

my '01 is pretty loud and it only has the 3'' stock with the muffler delete. make sure you check the fuel pressure, transmission, and trac bar before buying. the dealership ripped me off on mine all of the usually things on dodge were goin wrong. idk if ur buying from a dealership or just a friend
