01 Cummins questions
My truck has been moded with the fuel pump in the gas tank, Do i still need to get a fuel pressure gauge?
---AutoMerged DoublePost---
One other thing how often do i need to change the oil? The old owner the oil changed every 9k miles and the filter every 3k mi. Is this right? And another thing the fuel filter how often does it need to be changed? I was told it was important and needed to be changed often.

That depend on your driving I change mine every 6,000 miles some people on here change there oil 2 times a year. Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage Here is a place to start to look at some oil filters, change it when you change the oil.
Shouldnt say the intank pumps are junk. But IMO they do not supply enough fuel to the VP-44 to keep it happy. And when its not happy - your wallet is not happy.
Cummins spec is 10 psi - probably need 5 psi minimum at WOT. This is from the 01 service manual:

You definitely need a fuel pressure guage. Get a 0-30 psi guage. You may as well get a 0-60 psi boost guage while you are at it - they are around $40 - so they are a cheap troubleshooting tool.
I can help with the guage hookup as well. You need a gauge (obviously), 24V tapped banjo bolt (12mm), some fittings, a needle valve (to dampen the pulses from the VP-44) and some 1/8" DOT air brake line.
Install looks something like this (this is a post filter setup):

Another option is hooking it up on the VP-44 test port (although I wouldnt recommend it):

The best place (IMO) to mount the guage is slightly below the dash. Its kind of out of the way but routing the line is very easy:

Im partial to Isspro EV Series, DiPricol Optix, and Stewart Warner Performance series. Dont like Autometers on a diesel. Our sponsors here have some good prices - you can check them out if you want:

Your intank pump will be fine for awhile as long as you get a fuel pressure guage in the cab and watch it to make sure your are getting enough fuel to the injector pump.
If you have any more ?'s - fire away.

No problem.

Oh and oil changes - it really depends on what oil you use and how you use your truck. Anywhere between 6 and 9k miles would be good. I would also recommend using Fleetguard oil filters - the Stratapore (LF3894). Do not use a Fram or any other cheap filter (you get what you pay for). Also, its a good policy to change your fuel filter every second or third oil change.
