NV5600 noise

I got a buddy that has an 01 3500 4x4 with the NV5600 and he's complaining of a grinding/rattling/marble noise coming from the trans/transfer case. I said I'd come over and help him with, but the truck isn't driveable, he's drained the fluid out of the trans & t-case. He say's the noise will occur every 500-800 feet. This all the info I can give ya all. Any thoughts? He swears it's the t-case, but I think it's in the trans myself, at least from what he's told me?

Thanks!

if there was any grinding, thered most likely be metal in the fluid, hopefully he kept them seperate so you can check. but since he didnt, id refill both, drive it, try different ranges(4lo-4hi etc) and different gears in different ranges and see if you can pin point it down to a certain gear/range.

I would begin by narrowing the options. Put everything in neutral , press the clutch is there any noise? If not put the tranny in gear and let the clutch out... Any noise? If not pull the trans case in 2 hi 4 hi and 4 low . If it is the transfer case the noise will vary between each selection. Also check output bearings , throwout bearings , u-joints and so on. !

if it still shifts fine, and doesnt have any issues other than noise...check the throwout bearing. i had a rattle like you describe that drove me nuts...it was the throwout bearing that was bad.
