Starter Solenoid Fuse Blowing

starter solenoid fuse blowing causing motor to NOT CRANK over on a 2001 24 valve cummins. When i clean small wires on intake heater relay the fuse doesn't blow. So i replaced intake heater relay and cleaned all the wires and it was fine for a while, then it started happening again. Also sometimes the lift pump doesn't run. Could it be a starter problem or a lift pump problem?

Just trying to remember the wiring I don't think the two of these could be related unless there is a common ground someplace.

When it doesn't crank try tapping the solenoid with a screwdriver or somethin just to see if it's stuck. If I were a bettin man though I would say the starter contacts are shot and that's not allowing the truck to start would be the more common issue.

You may also try jumpin the solenoid to see if it works then. Just use an insulated pair of pliers or a screwdriver and touch both bolts at the same time on the back side of the solenoid. Solenoids go bad but I've never heard of a bad one blowing the fuse. They just hang open or closed.

Be sure to fill in your signature so we know details about your truck.

Greetings from N. Colorado.
I'm having this same problem w/ my 2,000 5.9 Cummins. I removed the starter & it tested fine at Napa(it's a Napa replacement, new in 2006).In addition, the copper contacts looked good. My mechanic told me that the problem must be in the solenoid. Any ideas or thoughts?

got the same problem ! but doesnt do it with my remote starter, so im thinking it might be the ignition switch ?:argh:
