vp 44 question

I see there are a few of the second gen with the vp 44 taking a dump. I have a second gen also and was wondering if there were any tell tale signs of the vp going out or is it just bam and its history. have 118,00 on my oil burner and i watch my lift pump press all the time especially when i tow to make sure it doesnt go below 5 psi and carry a spare lift pump just in case it does go out to avoid smoking the 44.

Sometimes yes but usually not. Ive seen them just quit completely, run rough, poor fuel economy, bad surge, dead pedle, all these together or just 1 issue. And sometimes when it gets hot and you shut your truck down it won't start until it cools off.

very rearly a sign of failure other than if yer lift pump dies and you continue to run it (if it will run) then yer time is done shortly after...............................80% of the fuel circulated by the lift pump provide cooling and lubrication to the VP-44 then returned to the tank........lift pump goes out and you have no more lubrication or cooling

The best way to keep your VP happy is to get a good lift pump - Airdog, FASS, or RASP....

When mine went out I started getting dead pedal. Checked for codes and sure enough vp was on it's way out. And I agree with Doc on getting a good lift pump. IMO, I think running down to 5 psi is to low.

anything below 10 psi in my opinion means death to the VP

Mine died last christmas morning without a previous sign of death. It just wouldnt start, it kept cranking and cranking but wouldnt fire.
I have ran this one for 125k now and it hits 0psi daily (16 at idle) even with the fass and its still fine, I just keep the runs to 0 short. Half pedal it stays around 5-7 so I try and keep it to that.
