24v questions

hey my buddy has a 2001 5.9 24v. he is looking to get some more power and he said he talked to D&W diesel, and they told him to bring it up and they could tweak the IP to put out more power and that didnt sound quite right to me. i was under the understanding that there wasnt really anything you could do with these pumps? what are your thoughts on this? also i was looking into injectors and i found some rv275's on ebay and i also found some stage 5's that they claim adds 200hp. what are your thoughts on this, what if thats reallistic, what else would have to be done to run them? i doubt you can just throw them in and run, like the add claims. ok well any input would be greatly appreciated thenks.

Your buddy better find a different shop - there is no amount of tweaking that can produce any performance from an electronically controlled injector pump. If he wants more performance he will have to buy a fuelling box and/or performance injectors.

Your right, you just cant buy a 200 hp part and throw it in. Upgrading must be done properly. The first step is guages, 4 or 5" exhaust, a free flowing air filter, transmission upgrades....only then can you add peformance upgrades. After any performance upgrades are added, it will likely be time for a bigger turbo or compound turbos.

ok so after i do the guages, exhaust, and air filter i figured i would go with the airdog 150. what else do i have to do to support larger injectors, wheather it be rv275's or 200hp injectors? and what do you mean by a fueling box? i know it has a chip but im not sure what one specifically.

After the things you mentioned above I would also suggest a larger turbo. A fueling box is anything like, edge comp, tst powermax, adrenaline, smarty. There are alot of them. Some are just fueling and some are timing and fueling. What people refer to as chips now a days are fueling and, combination timing fueling like I had mentioned:U:

oh ok thanks. now as far as the turbo goes, would i have to get a bigger one or could i just make the one we have put out more? and how will the fueling box know to compensate for the 200hp injectors?

Dr. Evil 02-28-2009 07:38 PM

Yes, sorry I forgot about the fuel system - you CANT go wrong with an Airdog 150

I would spend the money on a trans before ANYTHING. A stock truck with a good trans is seat of the pants better right off the bat. You are talkin' injectors, turbo and fuel system and the first pedal mash you make will be the last one for that input shaft (or converter)

first you need to know what the plans are for the truck. Is this an auto or manual? if it's an auto no matter what the plans are for the truck the trans will be the weak link. The turbo that came with the auto is not the best and would say upgrade in due time. Now you can take the stock truck and put some 275's in it and it will run great. But as in anything you buy off ebay I would be worried they are not in the best of shape and need some work. I think with a small set of injectors new is better than ebay. If your planning on a programmer I would get one with built in gauges and this will save money and make sure you get one that does fuel pressure too. Even with the small injectors your stock lift pump will really not supply them proper.

it has a manual transmission. the truck is more or less a playtoy but will sometime be used to pull a trailer. this is what i was thinking, buy the guages, use the chip thats in the truck now, plug the pressure line to the turbo, airdog 150, and rv275's. does this sound doable? will it work?

that sounds like a nice setup to start with ^^^^.
