do you have a fuel pressure guage to make sure the pump is actually working...does have any codes even though it doesnt have a CEL doesnt mean it didnt throw a code

cumminsman65 02-20-2009 10:54 AM

I aint any expert but i was taught since birth all a diesel needs to run is fuel and air, work it backwards from both ends and you should find the problem. prolly aint no help.

runnin good before it died?

Are you sure you are getting fuel to the injection pump? My guess is you are not. If you are, it's most likely the VP44 that is the culprit. If you are getting fuel to the injection pump, you need to crack the injector lines to see if you are getting fuel to the injectors. Welcome to Dieselbombers by the way, sorry your first post has to be for help.

I agree with Mishkaya................crack injector lines 1,3,4 and bump the starter to trigger the air dog.......do this 3 times the tighten the lines down and re-start..............give 1/4 throttle and start it up

wake26 02-20-2009 12:35 PM

It was running good before it died to me it didnt show any signs that something was wrong. I will check the supply lines and the injection lines when I get home. Will the VP go out that quick?????

cumminsman65 02-20-2009 12:43 PM

Iv never heard of a VP44 going out withou any warning sighns, stupid ? but you do have enough fuel in the tank right?

wake26 02-20-2009 04:16 PM

getting fuel to IP but no further nothing comes out of the injecter lines. throws code p0253. the reader says to test the pins 6&7 on the plug on the back of the IP. we have power on 7 but nothing on 6. any body have any Ideas. yea full tank

Whit 02-20-2009 04:23 PM

po253 code is open circuit to fuel injection pump.......aint good

I say go back out there and try again, crack inj lines 1,3,4 and bump starter to move some fuel, tightem em back up and try to start with 1/4 throttle...................if its got fuel than it will run

I have seen more VP44 just plain quit than I care to mention. They can fail without any warning whatsoever at any point. My guess is you are in for a replacement. On the plus side, you might like to know that the recently remanufactured pumps are MUCH more reliable than before. Hopefully your next pump will give you many trouble free miles.

underpressure! 02-20-2009 06:29 PM

Sounds to me that the computer on top of the pump took a crap......they are known for the computers going out before anything internal happening.

is there any way to know for sure I hate to throw down $1200 buck if I don't have to.

You can test it by hotwiring the pump, pins six and seven, and cranking the starter. If you get no fuel to the injectors this way, the pump is dead.

was out looking at the truck again had my son in trying to start it a heard a clicking noise coming from the air do relay but it is still pumping this wouldn't have anything to do with the problems?

I doubt it if it was still pumping, it pumps at a reduced rate while cranking the engine, and that's probably what causes the noise.

:argh:That sucks know it is just deciding where the best place to buy one is. There is a tone of places selling them.
