3.31 Gears in a 1 Ton???

Hey guys. New to the forum. I hope I'm in the right spot; couldn't find a section for drive train. Was thinking of installing a set of 3.31 gears in my 2000 Dodge 3500 2 wheel drive. Its a 5 speed hooked up to a Cummins. I mainly use it as a daily driver and occasionly pull my boat with it. Has anyone made this swap? Pros and Cons please. Thanks!

what size tires are you running?? if you plan to tow, esepcially if its a bigger boat, i would not gear it that high, itll hurt more then itll help. plus from what ive read, 3.55s are pretty much the best gears when running tires stock size to 305s, any taller, they say mileage it actually hurt a lot and to run 4.10s. i personally dont see very many pros about it, the cummins motors dont like to be over-geared like that.

Thanks for the reply. I'm running stock size tires 235/85/r16., and pulling a 20' Allison (very lightweight). I can pull the boat now and not even know its back there with the 3.55s. Just trying to squeeze out every MPG I can.........

stay with 3.55s, any lower will hurt MPG anyway.

Well I lied. I pulled it apart this evening after work and it is 4.10 gears. Seems like I would have noticed this;:humm: Would there be any problems installing 3.55s in this case? I know there is a difference in the carriers but how 'bout the case?

should go right in and you will have much better mpgs. I get 14 towing with mine and it's a 4x4. actually just towed a 75 blazer running 68 mph for 401 miles and got 14 mpg. trailer is 2200, blazer is 5300, and had another 300 in extra parts. 4.10's would have killed that

get that 3.55 in there...4.10's are a flat out towing gear...i got em and hate it anywhere but when im running it...id venture to say something like a 3.73 would be the best mix if you tow about 50% of the time...but in your case with the light trailer, 3.55 would be more suitable

Thanks guys. Hey, doesnt Dana come with Timken bearings? I found KOYO bearings in this thing. I'm the second owner of the truck and it doesnt appear to have ever been taken apart.....

im gearing mine to 4:10's within the next few weeks. with 36's the 3:54's is just too tall. the carrier is differant but the housing is the same. i will be selling my gears as soon as i get them out, so if your interested, send me a pm. my ring and pinion along with my carrier will be for sale, all you will need is the shim kit, which is about 85 bucks.
