Truck is in the shop!

I brought the truck in to the shop for new ball joints. While they have it apart, I am getting them to replace the front axle u-joints. However, the hubs will not come apart, so guess what? Yup...I have to get new hubs now too.
So a job that was originally going to cost 750.00, will now cost about 1900.00 (might as well get new front rotors while they have it apart since I will need them next brake job, anyways).
That really sucks!

scottsjeeprolet 10-18-2008 07:53 PM

Ouch!:ouch:
Sucks your not in MD, we could have done that for a lot cheaper.

Marine 10-18-2008 08:00 PM

I know it! At least the new stuff will have a lifetime warranty. :U:
It sucks that it is right before hunting season, because I need the cash for fuel! lol.

Dr. Evil 10-18-2008 08:37 PM

Wheres that at?

Marine 10-18-2008 08:39 PM

Butte MT.
Rotors are 89.00, hubs are 450.00 IIRC.

Dr. Evil 10-18-2008 09:01 PM

Oh, would be double up here...thought ya got stuck up here with a breakdown.

Marine 10-18-2008 09:29 PM

I know it! I had to do the rear brakes up there and it was 950.00! I cried!

sidekick 10-19-2008 04:35 PM

know how that feels i took my 06 to the dealership for ball joints and they said its not bad only 22,000 miles. Didnt make it home from the dealership and they gave up. I just put 40's on it aswell so there is a pile of body damage now the service manager isnt real happy

GetBlown5.9 10-19-2008 04:43 PM

not sure where you got the hubs but i paid $270 for them at the local parts joint.

01quadcab 10-19-2008 09:30 PM

They seem to be taking advantage of you on the hubs the local shop that did mine only charged me 325 installed

Marine 10-20-2008 11:15 AM

Thank, I'll check.
Mike

Is that each side or for both?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Are they lifetime warranty hubs?

01quadcab 10-20-2008 09:47 PM

that was for the driverside think it had 3yr warranty on them not sure though.

Marine 10-21-2008 09:12 AM

2200.00 total:

86.00 x 2 for rotors (Didnt have to get them)
89.00 x 2 for front u-joints
99.00 x 4 for ball joints
450.00 x 2 for hubs
alignment
7 hrs labor IIRC
All with lifetime warranty.

It sure is a lot more solid than it was before!

01quadcab 10-21-2008 10:47 AM

mine was almost that but 4 ball joints, 1hub all new tierods and mount and balance my tires I picked up from summit

Marine 10-21-2008 02:31 PM

That price is including 4 ball joints.

AF1CUMMINS 10-21-2008 05:07 PM

Dude, if you're gonna pay that much you might as well go ahead and get the hub conversion. That way next time you need new bearings or what have you, you can avoid replacing the whole unit. But don't feel alone, there's a shop up here that wants 2grand to install an exhaust brake, my Quad Adrenaline, Air Dog 150, and and a gauge pod.

Marine 10-21-2008 05:32 PM

I looked into that years ago. IIRC they were more than the Auto hubs.

damn, ill do it for ya for 100 bucks if you were closer.

Marine 10-24-2008 09:52 AM

Well I was up in the mountains scouting for elk the other day. I walk out in front of my truck and see gear oil all over the inside of my right front tire.

The shop says that it may be residual from when they pulled the axle, but they say it is probably the seal on the 3rd member.

What do you all think?

01quadcab 10-24-2008 10:47 AM

So are the saying axle shaft seal or the gasket around your front diff? Check your gear oil... Your running amsoil aren't you? If so did they fill it up with something different when done?

Marine 10-24-2008 11:54 AM

Axle shaft seal.
I am running Amsoil. Whether they replace it with that, I do not know. They do know that it has Amsoil in it.

scottsjeeprolet 10-24-2008 01:00 PM

Just hose it off real good with some brake cleaner & see if it comes back. Could be just left over oil that was in the tube.

Dr. Evil 10-24-2008 02:06 PM

Mike the seal will usually fix itself in a few hundred miles - but if they knicked the seal real good it may need to be replaced.

dukeboy_318 10-24-2008 05:46 PM

i fixed mine awhile back and i had the same thing happen, it ended up just being left over from the orginal seal, hopefully yours is the same problem. Most shops put on the recipts what oil was used, at lease my local ones do, id check that to be sure they put amsoil back in.

Do you have 2 wheel or 4 wheel ABS?

The hubs for 4 wheel ABS are about twice the price.

Marine 10-30-2008 08:48 AM

To all,

They did replace the seal.
I have 4 wheel ABS.

I doubt they put Amsoil back in, but that is ok; I can do that again. A small price to pay for what they did for me: They said that normally they say up front that the seal may have to be replaced and that there is more cost in doing that, but they did it for me no charge AND fit me in to their busy schedule.

If you are ever in Butte and need work done (or even tires, I bought some there too) I highly recommend Lisac's Tire (American Car Care Center on Harrison Ave). Bob (owner) and Guy are fabulous to deal with and their customer service is outstanding. :U:

Mr.Krabs 11-01-2008 11:27 AM

All that $ is why I do this stuff myself, heck I changed my passenger side balljoints in the driveway, cost me like $100.(it was a PITA though, holy crap those babies are in there)
So far the only U-joint I've changed is the very rear one.
425k on the truck.
Getting the stock front wheel bearings off was terrible, used the bolt trick and a big ass sledge hammer, hours of pounding....lol
