Turbo Issues

Hi.

Took my air intake loose from my HY35 yesterday on my 2001 2500, to check everything out. There was some darker oil on the fins and the lower portion of the silencer ring. The oil wasn't wet, but had a tacky feel to it. I grabbed the turbo shaft and tried to see if it had any play to it. It had a decent amount of side to side, and up and down play. It also have a very little bit of in and out play. The compressor fins aren't rubbing the housing as of yet. Spins freely, with no binding. I don't know if it's going bad, needs a rebuild, or possibly go I'm the direction of another turbo. I'm about to make a long trip in it towing a camper. Also, I don't use an oiled air filter. Stock housing and air intake tube are dry as a bone. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like it is either time to rebuild or just replace the turbo. I would for sure replace before the trip towing a camper. How many miles is on the truck?

Thank you for your reply. The truck has 215,000 on it. I was thinking about changing it to an HX, and straight piping it. Hopefully being stock, the EGT's will stay at a good temp.

No problem, the HX is a good upgrade to go with. And yes the EGT's should stay within range as long as you don't add a bunch of fuel to it
