NV4500 Shifting without Clutch
 

My truck has a recently installed new NV4500. I noticed that it is a bit difficult to get it into gear. It has about 1200 miles on it so I believe the synchros have had enough time to break in. I'm not sure if the proper fluid was installed so I am going to change it.

When I spoke to the supplier of the transmission, one of the things he mentioned is that I should be shifting without the clutch. This is contrary to everything I've read and experienced. I respect his opinion as a professional who knows way more about this stuff than I do, but I don't understand it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like there was some miscommunication between myself and the supplier. They confirmed that the transmission should be shifted with the clutch.

in truth....yu only need clutch to start and stop.old time trucks you only had gears to shift,miss one you had to stop and start over again.....

But why risk the potential for damage when there doesn't have to be on a more modern transmission.

Do use the clutch. To start, stop and normally drive. A lot of truckers don't use the clutch. But the clutch and throw out bearings are designed differently then the ones in light duty trucks and cars. Is it possible to not use the clutch? Yes. Is it smart. No. Use the clutch so you don't have to replace a transmission due to grinding grears off the shafts in the trans.
