New to me

Hi folks. I am going to join the Cummins world! The truck I am looking to buy is a 2000 5 speed 2wd with 241000 miles. I know about the killer dowel pin so that's the first priority. Now for the big question. The injection pump has been replaced, but it has a Holley "blue" for a lift pump. That is probably not adequate, correct? It fires right up cold or hot and runs strong. What is the likeleyhood the ip has been damaged? Is there any way to know?

The I.P pumps are not the piece of shit every one says it is, only idiots who know nothing about soomething say it is. So what kills the I.P pump is the lack of fuel delivered to the I.P, if it drops below 5PSI at W.O.T it will eventually kill the pump. Ive ran nothing but stock lift pumps and gone 200K on the injection pump and its still purring. OEM lift pumps suck but they seem to go bad on road trips for me. I never deleted the KDP on my truck, its not much of an issue for the 24V as its is for the rattling 12Vs. You wont be able to tell if the I.P is damaged until it just dies, so put a fuel pressure gauge on your truck to monitor the pressure to the I.P from the L.P and monitor it. I personaly believe that the L.P dies because of lack of changing the fuel filter(guilty) which causes excessive restriction the on the lift pump overheating it and killing it, and when it dies it will eventually kill the I.P.

Thank you for the reply. That makes a lot of sense to me. I am going to go ahead and fix the KDP for peace of mind. The next thing will be a pressure gauge. If the pressure is too low I will replace the lift pump. If it does end up needing an IP, I won't be too awful deep in the truck.

Make sure to get a quality lift pump. Do your research before hand.

Any recommendations?

FASS number 1. I have heard Fuel boss is a good mechanical pump.

Fass is a good fuel system no complaints there, you can get a OEM replacement or buy the bigger ones with a fuel filter and waterseperator housing on it but that will require some retrofitting

Thank you guys for the replies. I have pieced together a fuel system. I have a pressure guage, 1/2" line, and what seems to be the most popular filters (bf1212 pre- pump and cat 1r-0749 post pump). I just need to get it all installed as soon as I have time. Hopefully I will be done with fuel delivery issues for good.

Sounds like a job for ....tomorrow??

Also look into running some type of lube in the fuel. 1oz of 2-stroke oil/gallon of fuel will suffice. So...1qt initially then however many ounces you add gallons of fuel from then on. There are other products on the market but 2-stroke is readily available. Ask professor Google. He has lots of info.
