atf in bellhousing?

Sorry if this is a repost, I looked on Google n couldn't find much help.

So I don't know anything about transmissions or bellhousings. I have atf leaking from the inspection cover off the bell housing (I believe). Thinking it was just a ripped seal, but there was no trace of a gasket ever. So my only assumption is that there probably isn't supposed to be atf in the bellhousing. What am I looking at now? Is it safe to tow it to the local tranny shop without much atf in there if its going to need a rebuild anyways? Had 1st-4th for a while then I was down to 3rd then I had nothing. Tranny shop said $2200 for a high end billet rebuild or $1800 for a dodge rebuild.

So you're saying you ran it out of transmission fluid already and the transmission is already toast?

Yes,that's the correct area with the inspection cover off. It could be the front seal went bad. I believe there is a vent in there too, but seal is most likely IMO. Either way, you're looking at a rebuild now. I'm not sure what you're asking about as far as towing.
