Can I swap an NV5600 with an NV4500?

Hello guys! New here!

I have been doing a little truck shopping recently and stumbled across a 2001 2500. 4X4, quad cab, long bed, Sport model, with good Nitto Mud Grapplers and some nice XD rims. Body has 293,000 on it and is showing its age, the old steel cancer is eating away at the rockers. Motor has 150K on it, with newer injectors, an Airdog 150GPH lift pump, and a 100-horse Superchip programmer. Six speed. The guy only wants $3500 for it. But, here's the catch: it got stuck in second, and instead of parking it and calling for a tow truck, he tried to limp it on home and ended up burning it up.

So, the question is, what would be cheaper? Are the NV5600s easy (relatively) to rebuild? What about expense wise? Would it be feasible/cheaper to swap in an NV4500? Or even a Getrag? I found one of those on eBay for relatively cheap.

Any help is appreciated! thanks!

I would get the 5600 rebuilt. Ease of hands-on repair of the 5600 vs the 4500 cant tell you, Not a trans expert. Would the 4500 be cheaper in the long run probably. But for 3500 it would be a task I would dive into. I would also ditch the airdog and put a fass system on it. Good luck on your potential purchase.
