02 Fuel sending unit issue?

Ok about 1 year ago i was driving my truck and my fuel gauge said 1/4 tank and 80 miles distence to empty but i ran out of fuel. right now i have about 2 gal in the tank im guessing but my gauge reads about 1/4 tank and 120miles to empty. so today i am dropping the tank and was going to see if i could just clean the sending unit but everything looks good. me and my dad tested it everything seems good. at full it reads 42 ohms and at empty it reads about 10 ohms. but at half tank it reads about 20ohms. i would like to try and save as much money as possible trying to fix this issue. i held the assembly up in the air and the sensor does sit about even with the bottom of the a assembly and a pick up tube. is their a posibility that my gauge is bad? like i said i want to do the sending unit but if it is good i want to try and save the money if i can. can i get your guys opinions?

Ive been having a similar problem on my 01. Mine bounces around all over the place even though i have a good sender. I doubt the gauge would be bad but i heard the ground for it is in the engine compartment in front of the driver and to check that. I still need to do that also.

I bought the sending unit from the dealer. So far I tested it out and seemed to work, right now I'm waiting on the tank straps so I can get the tank back on and find out for sure,
