1999 Ram 3500 basket case

Hey everyone! Newbie here and to the dodge cummins. First post too, so be gentle please.
I just picked up a 1999 Ram 3500 basket case. The engine that came with it has a tag on it that says it is a 2001. (Tag on the timming cover says 10/07/2000) I noticed that it does not have a crank sensor and there is not a tone ring behind the plate. (It does have a tone ring on the balancer but no sensor or bracket) When I install this engine should I just update the PCM and ECM to 2001 parts or buy/rig a sensor and bracket on the front of the engine to give the old electronics a crank signal? (A part number for a bracket and sensor would be cool too)
Will the newer electronics make more power or benefit me in any way at all?
Other questions to come.....many other I'm sure.
Thanks for any help!:jump:

I also read something about my alternator not charging without a crank signal. Is this true? Is the 2001 even supposed to have a tone ring on the balancer? Do I have the wrong balancer? Should I have one with only 2 notches? :argh:
