changing the gearing???

I am thinking of changing the ring and pinion gears in my truck to gain a little more top speed. any suggestions?? I don't know much about it. what is the stock ratio? want to put a locker in the rear end as well. any helpful information on the subject would be great.
thanks guys!

What you gain on the top is what you will loose on the bottom. There is always a trade. You should be able to find your ratio on a sticker in the glove box.

about how much would I lose on the bottom end?? if I changed from stock. just a geustimate?? im not to worried if its going to be just a little bit. but if its a substantial difference I wont bother. like I said I want a bit more top speed. not like im a heavy speeder. but yes I would like my truck to be able to go faster then 120kmph comfortably. and yes I realize its a diesel and there not high revving engines. but just asking for a bit more top speed shouldn't be a problem.

thank raw

My truck has 4.10 gears and needs another gear on the highway. the 4 spd auto does not cut it for the highway.

My truck, has 3:55. on the Hwy. it does great. 70mph no problem rpm around the 1800 area I believe.. BUT the trade off, is in town. it sucks, constantly changing gears.

im ok with changing gears lots. any difference in power on the bottom end? was it really noticeable or not? what brand do you have?

Agreed:argh:

The Auto has a higher top gear ratio than the 5 and 6 speed, FYI. Having a 5 or 6 speed would make the situation worse, if that is what your thoughts may be leading to.

You have the same setup as me. All the 6 speeds have a 3:55 gear ratio. Driving my dads with a 4:10 ratio sucks!!!! Plus not only is changing gears going to change a power issue. Its also going to change fuel mileage also.

Rayrod 02-18-2014 08:09 PM

so my truck being a 6 speed has 3:55 gearing? soo I want to be even a tiny bit faster then that. not a lot. just a bit. what is the next size down? or up? how ever it works.
