1st gen deal fell through. thoughts on a 24 valve.

So I was gunna buy a 89 d250 but it fell through. Thoughts on a 99 24 vvalve? It's a auto and has 20 miles and it's for 11 thousand, 2500 down. Sounds good? I never studied on the 24 valves only the CR and 12 valves and haven't even ever road in a 24 valve. Oh and it has a goose neck that worry me too with the high mileage and original looking vp44.

If its a auto I'd check for possible paperwork on it being rebuilt. Also if you can, check for a aftermarket lift pump because the stock lift pumps are too weak just running stock. I absolutely love my 99 cummins but it is a 5 speed so I dont have to worry about transmission problems. Take it for a test drive and feel it out!

vp44 is a good injection pump if you keep it properly supplied and lubricated.

I run 128:1 mix of supertech tcw-3 2cycle oil with my fuel and the pump gets 16-20psi fuel pressure at all times.

if you get one, get a fuel pressure gauge on it ASAP and put it on a 2-cycle diet. long as you can keep the injection pump fed at 14-20ish psi at all times: you shouldn't have a problem with it for a very long time...

average life for a well cared for vp44 is 200-250k miles+ not a bad life span.

they usually get taken out by a weak or failed lift pump which starves them for fuel which is their lubrication and coolant. this is why you need a fuel pressure gauge on a vp truck. keep the pressure in the safe ranges and it will last a very long time. :tu:

I'm running almost 600hp @ the rears and my vp44 is doing great :c:

things to look for: 53 block (and if it is a 53 block, check passenger side of the block above the freeze plugs for a crack/coolant stains.) if it isn't cracked or showing signs of a crack, go for it, (it's made it this far which means it wont likely crack) if it's not a 53 block (like a 55, 56 or STORM) then go for it

I have a '99 24 Valve with the standard and love the truck. It has had an upgraded pump and I haven't had any problems since but it did blow up on me. As noted above there are ways to prevent them from crapping out but at the time I didn't know about them.

Check the tranny records and see if it's been rebuilt.

I'm running a Van Aken box on mine with a flo-pro exhaust (3") and get 20mpg everywhere. Doing the exhaust upgrage to 4" and adding CAI this weekend and hoping for a bit better.
