Rear end rebuild
So I am going to pull the rear end out of my 99 as the bearings are shot and just curious as I am putting it back together basically stock.. don't do much with it as its a driver?? anything else to look into??

It's quite a chore. Pulling the bearings off the carrier can be a pain as can putting the new ones on. You need a press and probably a bearing splitter. To do it right you also need a magnetic base dial caliper to check backlash, and a set of dial calipers would be helpful to measure shim thickness behind the side and pinion bearings, and to measure the difference in race thickness between the old and new bearings to give you a starting point.
I've done it before and will take it in if it needs done again. I was re gearing which is a little more complicated, but doing gears in general sucks in my opinion. If you don't get the backlash, tooth pattern, and side bearing preload correct, it won't live long. P.S. If your truck has a limited slip, it would be the perfect time to put new clutches in it. |
