luke warm heat
My radiator crapped out on me Sunday, split the plastic side tank. I replaced it and filled it with new fresh coolant. Now my heat only blows luke warm. It worked fine before. Its about 15 to 20 degree out. What do you guys think?

Thermostat stuck open, or possible bad heater core. have the system back flushed by like jiffy lube or most oil change places there could be a build up of crap blocking the flow
i had this problem too id try back flushing your heater core its simple and im sure thats all it is does it get warmer when you give it gas?
I did the thermostat last night and I still don't have good heat. The gauge stays around the 190 mark. How do I back flush it? I thought about hooking a garden hose to it but everything is frozen. Could it be an air pocket and I have to open one of those plugs in the head?
You could have an air pocket but to flush the heater core there is two hoses running into the firewall them and run your garden hose through the colder hose for about 5 minutes or so when I did it I let it heat up enough to where I could feel one of the hoses get warm and than I pulled the colder one and run the water in that way let me know if that helps at all

I had the same problem But I bought the purple radiator flush from XDP and It fixed her up. I now have hot air coming from the vents instead of ice cold air haha :jump:
Royal purple radiator additive?
Get ready to pull your dash you probably need a new heater core if flushing it wont work
I don't have any coolant smell, there isn't any in the cab, and I haven't had any smoke come from the vents. So I don't think it's the heater core. I'm waiting for the weather to break to try and flush it.

A lot of people fill the radiator, start the truck and let the coolant cycle with the cap off, topping off as they go. The problem with this is that the engine won't reach full operating temperature with the cap off because it's a pressurized system. It's likely that the thermostat won't open because of this. There is a bypass hole in the thermostat (two, if you're using a genuine Cummins part) that will slowly let air out, but you'll be there forever.
There's more than one way to skin a cat, but I remove a coolant port plug as I fill it. This gets most of the air out immediately. When it's full, I replace the plug and the cap, bring the engine to operating temperature and turn the heater all the way up. You'll know your thermostat is opening if you pinch the upper radiator hose and feel a rush of coolant when you release it (be careful: the hose will be hot). Let the engine cool, remove the radiator cap and top it off. You may have to repeat the cycle a few times to get all of the air completely purged. Don't forget to mind the overflow reservoir. |

---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Mr beard or ram runner can you help with this At 150k, your truck was plenty broken in already. "A lot quieter" is a pretty vague description and I'd personally be more concerned with "a lot noisier". It could be that it was making racket from bad fuel and the new fuel you put in it helped with noise (I sometimes run WMO in the Summer and that makes my 2nd gen 12v much quieter because of the thicker "fuel" with added lubricity). I've seen exhaust leaks "fix" themselves by sealing the leak with soot, too, quieting things down. If the truck is running normally, has good oil and fuel pressure, normal EGTs (depending on your mods) and is otherwise mechanically sound, I wouldn't worry about less noise. It could be that you just got used to diesel rattle. |
