24 valve question

I have a 2001 24 valve 5 speed trans.Truck has 140,000 babied miles.I started the truck this morning and it was 50 degrees out. When i turned the key on and hit the starter the truck started so fast it shocked me.It usually turns over a time or two and then starts right up.
As i sat there and let the truck warm up the truck started to miss. The tach would fluctuate back and forth a little bit and and the motor was making a noise like it wanted to quit but it didn't.The engine light stayed on for about 15 minutes. I stopped and got some fuel.I started the truck back up and the truck ran fine with the engine light still on.I made one more stop in town and shut the truck off.I came back out and started the truck. It started fine and the engine light went out.I am not a mechanic and have no idea what this means or why the truck did this.Should i be concearned and have a diesel mechanic look at it?
Thanks in advance

I just checked for codes and none showed up.I hope that is a good sign.
It just seemed strange the way it happened. Thanks

I just checked for codes and there were none.
Any ideas why this happened and no codes?

next step would be to check your fuel pressure.

if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge on your truck (which I highly recommend a fuel pressure gauge on any vp44 truck because they are extremely sensitive to fuel pressure)

then go borrow a fuel pressure tester gauge from an auto parts store and check your fuel pressure between the fuel filter and the injection pump. if it is less than 10psi while running then you either need to change the fuel filter (if you haven't done so in the last 15k miles) or replace the lift pump (either block mounted fuel pump or if you/previous owner had lift pump replaced at a dealer it may have the in-tank retrofit lift pump)

fuel pressure should be between 10-20ish psi while the engine is running and under all engine load conditions (as in cruising and full throttle) if it dips below 10psi than the lift pump can't keep up with the injection pumps fuel demands.
