Loud knock when cold, goes away when warm

I just bought my first 24V Cummins and it sounds like a rod knock when warming up, on the other hand, it quiets up when the engine gets good and warm. Looking for some ideas as to whether its an injector or lift pump issue. I'm sure the neighbors will like me better when I resolve this issue.

How cold is it outside and what leads you to believe an injection pump or lift pump is causing this?

Cummins sounds like a rod knocking when cold.

Here is someting to consider from a Dodge Technical Service Bulletin (TSB). See what you think.

It sounds like the T-stat may be causing the problem. According to Cummins, especially in the 3rd generation 5.9L, the cold engine will knock until it warms up. My 2006 does this as does my 2001.

Here is something else to consider should you hear a knock while towing.

Engine knock or rattle sound when climbing a long grade and towing a heavy trailer.
This bulletin applies to 1998-2002 Ram trucks equipped with the 24-valve Cummins diesel engine (sales code ETC or ETH). Owners may experience an engine knock or rattle sound when climbing a long grade while towing a heavy trailer.

If the condition exists, replace the engine thermostat as outlined in the service manual. Note: Mopar 05015708AC is to be used exclusively for this service bulletin. Use thermostat 05015708AB for all other 24-vlave Cummins thermostat repairs.

It doesn't matter the temp outside, as soon as I start it up to warm up the engine before I go to work as well as when I get off work. When the engine gets up to operating temp it quiets up. I took it to a local diesel place and they claim the engine is fine but could be fuel delivery related.

Mine does this also and have no idea why it sounds like a misfiring injector or something whatever it is it shifts the entire truck when it happens. Only when it's cold. And not sure why?

Mines not as loud of a knock as yours but you can hear it. And jerks the truck.
