no power and smokin.

Hello. I have a99 cummins 3500 auTomatic. The other day I started it up and it ran fine for 30 seconds then the engine started reving up and down. It also started blowing white smoke. The pedal is kinda dead but has some response. The truck has very very little power. I changed the fuel filter and Its still acting the same. Oil and coolant look and smell fine. Any ideas guys? Thanks for reading. Oh yeah.... the truck is all stock. 170,000 miles.

I'm starting to think you may have a fueling issue. Maybe the lift pump is starting to go out starving the fuel pump of fuel??:humm:

My haynns manual says a lift pump that is operating incorrectly will cause low power and excessive white smoke. Of course this does not explain the surging idle.

sounds like your lift pump is dead...and it does explain the surging...no fuel = no run or extremely poor running...

get a fuel pressure gauge on there ASAP and do not start or drive it until you do!

you will be lucky if you haven't already destroyed your injection pump.

I'm gonna put a new lift pump on. Probablly an airdog. I Will let you know if that was my problem. Thanks for your input.

I'd think twice about an air dog. Been hearing of pump issues from factory.

Well sucks lol. I see most pEople either run fass or air dog. I just want the thing to last

jigabop 09-17-2013 02:47 PM

FASS hasn't been having the issues that airdog has...

they produced pumps for 2 years with bad seals...the seals were the wrong material and the diesel fuel would eat through them and leak into the pump motor killing the motor..
