Truck WILL NOT turn over..
The other day I got in my truck, cycled the heater plate a few times and tried cranking. I smelled a burning smell, starter was smoking bad.
Took it off, had a warranty on it, got a new one, put it on, nothing. Figured it would be a relay, got one yesterday, Notta. And today being pretty cold compared to the past few days I noticed my WTS light wasn't coming on. It's been plugged in but it would still at least show for a moment. I'm not getting any codes when I do the key turn. Appreciate the input. |
Check your fuse..
|
^yep, all fuses and relays. I have heard there is a fuse inside the fuse box itself. A buddy had that issue in the past.
|
Been checkin fuses all day! Lol
I'm grabbing a new heater grid relay just in case. Going to take all the wires off and check them too |
I'm still pretty new to my cummins and its WAY too cold for me to go out and check, but on my John Deere and Mahindra tractors I can jump the studs on the starter and turn the motor over that way... can you do this on your truck? If so it maybe that can narrow things down a little.
|
I just got off the phone with a mechanic at Chrystler Dodge, said I'm gettin close and that the relay may be he problem. If not it the wires.
Going to work on it when I get home from the hospital ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Well, i JUST replaced the intake heater relay, nothing.:argh::dang: Gunna check the wires like crazy tomorrow since it's dark thirty out now -_- |
IS there power at the small wire at the starter when you turn the key to start?
|
I just jumped the starter with a screwdriver and it turns over nicely.
my CEL is on, go figure, WTS light is working now that I replaced the IMH relay so that WAS ONE of the issues. |
So I picked up a code reader, used it just a bit ago, it pulled these codes.
P1693, A companion DTC was set in both the ECM and PCM P0234, Turbo Overboost condition, x2. Not sure how this happened since she's mostly stock.... P1689, No communication between ECM and Injection pump module. |

are you a member on Cumminsforum? If so I think you should post it up there... more traffic than over here for an issue like you are having. Sorry I can't be more help.

Got both forums open on the laptop. It's 6am so I got some time before I head out there and tinker with her. -14 here so I'm not really in a hurry..:td: |
No Comm between ECM and PCM sure sounds like an issue. Have you cleared the codes, and rechecked? I'll try to find a schematic that shows the CAN wires between the two.

I unplugged my ECM last night for a bit and plugged it in, nothing changed. I talked to a guy that said he had the same issue and that was all he had to do to get it to fire up.. Not my case apparently.:argh: ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- did you mean injector pump? the PCM just had the turbo overboost codes in it.. The P1693, just tells you that there's a code tripped in both the PCM and ECM. |
P0234 could be bad wiring to throw that code. If it was in there twice, once is for an Active code, the other for a Stored could. It could also be stored in both Computers.
|
Yea idk how that code got thrown, truck is basically stock. I'm more worried about the 1689 than anything.
Ok, idk what to call it or what it is, but when I turn my key to cycle the intake heater, I used to hear a... "growl". from the engine area, now, I don't. That's why I'm leaning towards there being a blown fuse/relay or a bad wire somewhere.. |
Could that growl be the Raptor?
|
Nahh, I can hear the Raptor. It's been doing this since before I put the raptor on.. I want to say it sounds like something pressurizing.. but I'm not 100% sure.
I know that if I do hear it, I'm 99.99999% sure it'll fire lol |
I can't think of anything that would growl under the hood, except a block mounted fuel pump. Unless it's something that has gone bad.
|
No flippin idea... I've got the frame mounted Raptor and I can hear it just fine.
It's done it from the day I bought it, until the day it died.. About 2 1/2 weeks ago now! When you turn your key to cycle the intake heater, but not start it, you don't hear a sound like somethin pressurizing or somethin.. growling L0l I'm going nuts just trying to figure out what that SOUND is, let alone what's wrong with my truck. ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Just found this on a google search after 6451563 different sites. P1689- Oil Pressure Control Solenoid Circuit Malfunction P1693 Turbo Charge Control Circuit Malfunction hmmm... |
Nope, I don't hear that. Could be the grid heater relays below the drivers battery.
|
True, but I replaced it.. my WTS light comes on now..maybe a bad wire?..
|
"It"? There are two of those relays.

Gotchya, the assembly. So they work properly now?
Growling was happening, growling stopped, those were replaced? Growling could have coe from them. |
Yep, my WTS light comes on and then cycles off after the set time(depending on how cold it is)
Hmm.. possible. I'll have to have my buddy come over with his 99 so I can see if his does it! I'm goin bat s*** crazy bein stuck at this apartment.. Still not light out yet so I'm searchin around like crazy. I'm workin outside, parked on a effin snowbank..:argh: |

Here is the ecm-vp44 data link diagram
Attachment 35661 Is the truck cranking with the key or are you still jumping the starter? |
Nothing with the key, I just tried jumping it to check the starter again, that still turns the starter. Outside with it right now
|
Check fuse 9 & 11 in the dash and fuse 9 under the hood.
|
Checked em already.
Even just went out and checked em again. All good.. Think I'm taking the 08 6.7L to go grab a code reader from my buddy again. Hopefully he's not busy!:bat: |
With all the fuses good the only other thing that I can think of that would keep the key from cranking it is the park/neutral switch or clutch position switch.
|
|
I'll print that off for sure.
Sadly I'm not at my place or I'd be out there. Sucks whe. Your ride is down! Get stuck places! |
Talked to a family friend that works on these trucks and only these trucks, said that after a that I've replaced that it's most likely my park/neutral safety switch. Gunna check it out in the morning!:tu:
|
Got the beast running! :rocking:
Thanks for all the advice guys!:c: |
Glad you got it running. What was the problem?
|
Fuse, to the ECM. Had the SMALLEST crack in it. Even the test voltmeter said it was working. Never saw it until lastnight being that it was 12am and I had my LED flashlight on em, usually worked on her in the day light. :argh:
But, she's gettin it again!!! Missed her. :tu::jump: |
