Starting issues
 

Hi all I have a 1999 24valve 4x4 and I had a bad alternator about a year ago and replaced it. Truck was fine for about 6-7months and my truck started to crank slow like the batteries were draining down. I charged the old batteries and it started right up. It did it again so I charged the old batteries and load tested them they tested on the lower side of good, so I replaced them with Les Schwab xhd batteries. It would still crank over slow even after I drove it in the morning. I drove it to work and when I left it would barley crank over. I drove home and let it idle for 2 hours while I was working in my shop turned it off and it wouldn't crank over. I took off the alternator had it checked by two different shops and it test good. I charged my batteries up and checked for a draw. Nothing. It has sat for two weeks and batteries still at 12.4. Go to start it and it would barely turn and sounded like rusty metal squeaking. Turned off the key nothing not even a click. So is it the starter that has been causing the slow starting not alternator issues. I was told the regulator for the alternator is in the ecm. I'm just hoping its the starter, nothing bigger. I had my wife hit the key and with a volt meter it goes from 12.4 to about 12.09 and no sound from the starter at all. thanks for your help.:argh:

Regulator is in the PCM, NOT the ECM. If the regulator was bad you would have check engine lights. Well, I did anyway. You can take the starter off and have it tested as well. Its not too hard. 3 bolts and disconnect the leads and shes off. When the regulator was bad, it would start fine but 2 miles down the road my check engine light would come on and i could watch my voltage gauge start to drop. It sounds like the starter. Just my 2 cents though :c:

I recently had a started issue and it was about the same as you are experiencing. Had the starter rebuilt no more issues.

Thanks for your reply. I also think it is the starter. I will pull it this weekend and have it tested. Will keep you all posted. Sucks about the regulator. If mine goes bad I am going to find me internal regulated chevy alt and adapt that on there. I hate computers.:bat:

i had the same deal batterys were good all wires etc and it was the starter!
