Just broke down.

I just broke down I'm waiting for my dad. But I'm guessing my alternator blew. I needed a jump at school and then I barely had power. HIDS wouldn't turn on just flicker like a strobe light and then the compression got really loud in my truck like if you were to accelerate when it's cold. Finally all lights in dash and blinkers shut off. Kicked it in 4x4 drove in the ditch to the gas station. Turned it off. Now it won't crank at all alternator fuse was blown at school so I replaced with a wire and the alternator side of engine bay smelled like burnt plastic.

Could I hve hurt anything running it on low voltage like the IP. I didn't give it a lot of gas when all lights went off. The fuel pump didn't shut off either I'm guessing. I'm not sure.

Without an alternator the cummins got me to a gas station via a ditch. :choochoo:

Well your fuse blew for a reason they are there to protect stuff from damage and protecting your wires from bursting into flames. Replacing it with a wire most likely fried some wiring and the alt. Maybe even more you dont know yet. With no alt and possibly a short in the wiring you could of drained your batts in a matter of minutes

Well the fuse was blown and then I noticed it wasn't charging and the check gauges like was on and I was running 12 volts I drove like 10 minutes and the volts started dropping. After I shut it off and put the wire in it started up but still no charge. No wires were hot or anything. I put the wire in before I started driving.

I'm guessing the alternator is toast.

Most likely the alt is toast. I'd have a parts store check it before buying a new one though.

Main question I have is do you think I hurt anything from running such low voltage?

RAW 12-10-2012 09:18 PM

Low voltage induces High amperage. There are fuses to protect for High amperage. I believe all electric pieces will be fine, lights, motors, etc. Electronics, on the other hand, are much more sensitive. Computer boards may have been damaged, or wrecked, but the only way to tell is to put the proper power back to everything and find out.

I think you will be fine. I am currently battling my Batteries dying and tracing the draw. So far, everything is still working fine when I get the truck fired up. VP, Computers, CD player, Sat Radio, all OK.

Well when I jumped it at home and ran it off a different alternator. Everything worked. Gonna change it tomorrow ill let y'all know what happened!!

Ok truck is all working I got a code for dead pedal but I'm guessing tht was when everything died

Could be. How are you getting your codes, code reader? Tried clearing and trying again?
