Diesel Fuel Tank Fittings

Can somebody tell me what kind of fitting is used to connect the return line to the diesel tank on my second gen. please? An explanation of how to remove it (remember it's out of sight) would also be appreciated.

It uses the 3/8 "spring lock" fittings. Go to your local automotive store and pick up the fuel and A/C spring lock tool.

The fitting comes apart with your hands. You need to press down and pull out in a single motion and it will come off.

The tool helps but it isn't needed 100%.

Mine came lose pretty easy with a knife. Them factory fittings are a pain in the backside and notorious for going bad. I never have figured out how to get them apart in one piece.

The first step in this process is to disconnect the existing fuel line connected to the fuel tank pickup tube; this can be a challenge if you have never done it before as most of the work is done by feel since you cannot see the actual tank module, I have found 2 different ways to get to the feed line pickup, first is to lay under the truck and reach up and on top of the tank you will feel it or if your truck isn’t equipped with wheel well liners then you can go in from inside the wheel well, if you choose this method it will be easier to remove the left rear wheel and support the truck with a rated jack stand for safety. The line you are after is the one toward the rear of the truck as you can see in this picture, notice how the blue retention clip is inside the plastic fuel line connector. The trick here is to squeeze the two tabs together as to release the clip from the shoulders of the pickup tube inlet, squeeze and pull the connector off, the blue retention clip will stay with the pickup tube inlet , then you simply pull the retention clip one side at a time towards you till it actually inverts itself, do this to both halves of the clip and it will slide right off.

That is precisly the information I wanted, thank you. One more question, when the blue clip is removed is the spigot on the tank unit suitable for attaching a 3/8 fuel line using a hose clamp?

yes......slide er on there and put 2 clamps on it :U:

You just made my day. I've spent the last ten days converting this truck to run on waste veg.oil. The fuel return was the LAST job, wouldn't you know it would be a problem:argh::argh::argh: Tomorrow I will pick up some extra fuel line and "git er dun"

Thanks again:U::U::U:

I know when I installed my Fass I used the supplied line from the kit for the feed to the pump then U used the original feed line as the return since it was larger ..............just a thought

When I put my FASS on I had a buddy help. We used the FASS supplied line and he fitted it on the tank which is why I didn't know how to do it.

After your help yesterday I went out to the truck and managed to get a look at the tank fittings. He had used 2 hose clamps on the FASS supply line just as you suggested. I got the return off and now have a new return line fitted also with 2 hose clamps. The origional line is nylon cored so there is no way to use regular fittings on it, plus is is only 1/4 inch i.d. I needed to have the line from the tank go to one port of a solenoid valve (DR) and the return line from the engine/IP (R) go to another port both of which have 3/8 fittings which is why I'm using 3/8 line. The other port (VOR) loops the Veg Oil back to the suction side of a second FASS pump.

Yoy are right, it IS fun:U::U::U:
