Adding cab lights to 2500
 

Wondering if anyone has installed cab lights to a rig that did not come that way from the factory? Procedure?

Yeah, I've done a few sets, it's pretty easy. Basically what you do is pull the headliner down, drill the holes through the roof, mount the lights, wire it up.

Once you get the headliner down, you'll notice there are 5 holes about 1" in diameter IIRC. What I did, was just eyed up the center of the hole, drilled up from the inside for the wire (which for my light was in the center of the fixture). Then once I got the wire through, held the light in place and marked spots for the mounting holes and drilled down from the top.

As far as the wiring goes, mine were grounded through the light, so I didn't have to worry about the ground. For the power, I spliced all the lights together on a single wire, and spliced into the parking light wire on the back of the headlight switch.

Thanks. Anyone know of decent LED fixtures? Any advice on removing and replacing the liner?

I was looking at Recon myself. As far as getting the liner off, it's pretty straightforward. Take off the overhead console (if you have one), visors, a-pillars, dome light, basically anything that holds the liner onto the roof, and then try not to bend it getting it out of the doors. :c:

Couple of clarifications...

Do the 2nd gen trucks have a plug on the passenger side pillar to run power to the lights? Where have you guys been running the ground wire to? Is there in fact holes in the roof frame structure to indicate where to drill holes? Be nice to avoid the whole measuring process.

No plug on the pillar for power. I ran a single wire down the driver's side a-pillar and tapped into the wire going to the parking lights from the back of the headlight switch. As far as grounds go, the lights I used grounded through the mounting screws, so no separate ground was required. Yes, there are holes in the structure that are about 1" or so in diameter.

I've been hearing mixed reviews on recons. A lot of guys have had bad luck with them so other guys have been going with pacer cab lights. They are also cheaper than recons.

I put a set on mine this summer. I checked under my headliner first to see if there was any wiring. No luck. Just wires for map lights. I got lucky at my pull your part junkyard, they had a truck with cab lights. I got the complete harness, auto dimming mirror, map lights, compass, temp. If you get a stock harness, make sure the plug in under the dash is the same. Total time it took me to install it all was around 6 hrs. But 3 hrs of that was trying to fish the stock plug in down between the A-pillar and dash!!

Got my cab lights in today. Everything you guys said is true. Thanks! It did take about 6 hours. Dropping screws and spending time locating them ate up an hour. They look HOT!
