Battery question

What is everyone take on what kind of battery I should get for my ole truck? I know optima is probably the best bet but would a good ole O'reilly's battery do me justice? Or Autozone? What cca should I be looking for? Seeing how winter is coming on and my batteries are getting a little sluggish. Any helpfull advice would be greatly appreciated.

The highest CCA rating isn't the most important, especially not in a diesel. Yes, lots of CCA is great to have when it is cold and your cranking over a diesel. Unfortunately all those CCA's come with a down side. More plates create more CCA's, but that means they are closer together. Vibration can have an affect on the plates being so close, and cause premature failure.

I think the best thing to do is read the reviews, and fully understand the warranty. Direct replacement, pro rated, or any at all.

If you are OK with modifying your batter trays, I'd make them bigger to fit group 31 batteries. Easy 1000CCA's and great longevity. Lots of construction equipment and hi-way tractors use them.

I have optimums in mine and I love them!!!! there great in the cold they dont act sluggish like other batt's I have had but that is if you can stomache the price and I was lucky enough that the previous owner put them in before I bought the truck!!! CCA is somewhat important because 800CCA total wont crank the truck very well... but like raw said too...

i was told by someone that the optimas ca was lower than the stock batteries that came in our trucks. i just get the interstate mega tron plus batteries the mtp 65s, they work great, we put them in all our diesels at work and they have a 5 year warranty as long as you dont buy them using a commercial account.

I have interstate mega tron plus batteries mtp 27's. 810 cca 1000 ca. No problems so far.

mbfd how much do those interstate batteries cost

shellinger 11-23-2012 05:36 PM

i just paid 130 dollars a battery today for the mtp 65, which are 850 cold cranking amps, but i did have to modify my battery tray a tiny bit to get it to fit. my old batteries looked nasty that came in my truck so i tested them today on the snap on load tester and one battery had only 349 cca available and the other had 410 cold cranking amps available. not good so i put the mtp 65s in after a little modification and it starts great now!

if you are a NHRDA member you get discounts on optima batteries direct from the factory making them cheaper than buying regular batteries. I have them in mine, my dad in his, and a buddy also has them they work great

I got them through work right off the interstate truck for $105 a battery.
