Need help with problem of idling.

I just got done with a 2 and a half hour trip. Drove about 70-80 mph the whole way. When i finally came to a stop at a stop sign i noticed rpms stayed around 1000 instead of normal. So of course when i went to pull out, it feels as if it wants to stall in 2nd. It doesnt, just feels really close to stalling.

What could cause this problems? Asked on cumminsforum with no real help... Only time i ever had this problem was once before on the same exact trip

RanchhandTCR 11-20-2012 10:31 PM

Hmm, I remember you askin me this a while back... to me it sounds like either a TPS issue or a Fuel issue, did you ever try grabing any codes or relearning your tps. And its only happening when you take these long trips right?

Ltk 11-20-2012 11:15 PM

Ill check codes tomorrow with the smarty. And yep only long trips. How do i te-learn the tps i forget?

Well sadly thats more than i can do. Im out of town without even a wrench to take the terminals off :argh: ill do that when i get home friday. But i will check codes with smarty in the morning. I lovin the smarty by the way. Getting way better mileage

RanchhandTCR 11-21-2012 08:27 AM

Glad your liking the smarty :tu:

An easy, tool-less thing to check would be where the APPS is sitting hen it is on high idle. Pop the hood, remove the cover from the APPS, and see if the linkage isn't going all the way to the stop when your foot is off the throttle. If not, something may be binding.

Ltk 11-21-2012 11:13 AM

Wheres the apps at under the hood? I have no clue what to look for

RAW 11-21-2012 11:37 AM

Front left corner of the engine:

Pull the cover off and this is what you will see:

If it's at 1000rpm, and you can pull the top of the linkage towards you slightly, there may be binding.

Ltk 11-21-2012 11:39 AM

How come it only happens on long trips, then on next startup it goes away?!

RAW 11-21-2012 12:22 PM

That part I can't explain exactly. maybe its heat related, and after hour of driving it get heated up enough. Not sure to be honest. Just trying to eliminate what is could be.

Ltk 11-21-2012 01:19 PM

It bothers me really bad lol. Im just waiting for it to stall or do this on a hill and stall...

It could need lubed? :humm:

RanchhandTCR 11-21-2012 09:29 PM

When you said shut off the start up you mean an imdeiate start up after shut down??? this is just a weird gremlin...

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Do you use your cruise controll??? maybe something wierd is happening there? I dunno lol!

Ltk 11-21-2012 09:40 PM

I started it up about 18 hours later. Same thing with last time. No problems after letting it sit. I shouldve tried immediately. And yes i used cruise ad i thought about that also..

When i kick cruise off by pushing the button to turn it off, the truck kicks. Could that be the apps binding or something? :humm:

RAW 11-21-2012 11:50 PM

The cruise cable does pull on the APPS to function. The cruise cable should have slack when not in use.

Ltk 11-22-2012 09:36 AM

I wish i knew more about this stuff lol.. :argh;

RanchhandTCR 11-22-2012 10:26 AM

Im now beginning to wonder if maybe your cruise is holding it up to 1000 rpm when you stop...hmmmm :humm: if I lived closer Id come out a look at it..

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Maybe next time you take a trip dont use cruise controll and see if it still does it, be a pain on your foot though!! lol

Ltk 11-22-2012 10:29 AM

Ill try the drive back without cruise :argh: not fun lol. But how could i loosen or check to see if the cable is doing that?

RAW 11-22-2012 12:02 PM

By popping the hood, removing the APPS cover, and looking at the cables. The lower cable goes to the trans, top outside to the foot pedal, and top inside to cruise.

Ltk 11-22-2012 12:34 PM

Ill check them when i get home. I hope its something simple. Driving hours without cruise is no fun!

RAW 11-22-2012 12:41 PM

Not at all. Of all the new fancy gadgets in a new truck, I'd take an old one with cruise over a new one with heated/cooled seat, sunroof, whatever.

Ltk 11-22-2012 12:52 PM

Cruise is the best thing since sliced bread

Ltk 11-23-2012 04:59 PM

Drove all the way home same trip same route without cruise. Same speed, etc... Didnt have a problem at all..

What should i do now? The apps reset, or check the cruise cable?

RAW 11-23-2012 05:17 PM

I'd check the cruise cable first, as it should be relatively easy. APPS reset and relearn take moire time.

Ltk 11-23-2012 06:46 PM

ok ill check it out tomorrow :rocking: hope its a simple fix if the cruise cable is binding up :humm:

RanchhandTCR 11-23-2012 08:07 PM

yea check her out man, and see if its dirty in there...

Ltk 11-23-2012 08:15 PM

Ok man lol

Ltk 11-25-2012 03:07 PM

I popped the apps cover of and i see nothing at all out of the ordinary. I will try reading codes

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

only codes were P1693, P0602, and P0462 :humm:

RanchhandTCR 11-25-2012 06:46 PM

P1693 Turbo Charger Curicuit Malfunction
P0602 Control Modual Proagrammin error
P0462 Fuel Level Curcuit Error.

Sounds like to me is that your smarty throwing those codes.

Ltk 11-25-2012 08:07 PM

The smarty owners manual said different things for those codes. I made a new thread about the fuel sending unit problem if u wanna read that.

Are these bad codes?
