Truck just quit running

I have a '99 Dodge 3500 with a stock 24v and it just died going down the highway last night. At the time I was pulling a trailer with a small dump truck on it. My tuck ran fine all day but it did seem to be lacking some power as I wasn't pulling hills very well. Anyway, all of a sudden my pedal went dead and the engine died. I tried starting it and after several times of cranking it did start but it only ran for about 45 seconds and died again. Does anyone have any suggestions where I should start looking? I was thinking the fuel pump?

Check fuel pressure
Check for codes
It could be as simple as a lift pump or cam sensor. It could also be as tough to handle as an injection pump. There are tons of threads and how to test pressure, what the codes say and what to get.

Also, try throwing a few gallons in the tank and prime the fuel system. I know it sounds silly but the fuel gauge can be lying to ya and it's a cheap/easy thing to try.

How old is the fuel filter? The suggestions above are very good.

I just changed the fuel filter last week before we headed out on a 1400 mile trip.

I pulled one of the bleeder plugs out of the filter housing last night and the fuel pump is not working. Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement pump?

Thanks for all the help!

FASS or an AirDog for sure. Which model depends on your HP expectations from the truck, budget, and how many filters.

I'm going with FASS with a low pressure light. I'm okay with stock performance.

Thanks for all the advice!

Sounds like you have made you mind up, FASS is a good name. If I were going for a replacement for stock, I would go with a Platnuim 95. Lots of flow for stuck, and has an extra filter.

The local diesel mechanic recommends FASS.....maybe bc I'm buying it through him!

Installed FASS lift pump this weekend. Truck fired up and ran fine. Very happy I didn't chew up the IP! :jump:

I'm glad to hear you are up and running. I hope no internal damage happened. When I first bought my truck, it had an EJWA, and a stock in tank pump. When the previous owner showed me the power by hammering the throttle, fuel pressure would drop to 0! If it wasn't for the deal I got, I probably wouldn't have bought the truck. I put a FASS150HD on ASAP, but I think there may be internal damage to my pump. Scorn plungers or something similar. It just doesn't seem right. Regardless, its been 3 years with the FASS on it, and it never skips a beat.
