Help with rough start
 
Alright this started mid summer, my truck cranks forever before it starts, and when it does it throws out a pile of white smoke, im guessing because of fuel build up in the cylinders? After its started its fine inless i let the truck sit for 6+ hours, now since its gotten colder out as long as i give it 2 wait to start lights, it fires up almost instantly, i checked for codes and am getting one for the air intake heater relay, is this my issue? I dont reqlly know what else to look at, thanks

It very well could be. The relays are on the front drivers fender, one for each part of the grid heater. If you are handy with a volt meter or test light, it is easy to diagnose.

I went ahead and took it off the truck this morning, my only question is if thats the issue why is it doing it in the summer.l? I thought it didnt need it in the summer, also can someone direct me to a new one? Does autoparts stores carry them?

Most parts stores should be able to get you one. The only reason I can see it acting that way is the computer control. It may go into a safety mode because it sees something wrong.

It couldnt possibly be loosing prime could it? I mean all the white smoke is fuel build up?

White is typically coolant burning. It could very well be loosing prime as well. Two key cycles may be what it needs to make up for the lost fuel. The lift pump will run for 1 or 2 seconds each time the key is turned on.

I don't even run a grid heater unless it gets 20 or below then it doesn't like to start.

Well as soon as i bump the starter my fuel psi shoots up to 15psi, and when i say 2 key cycles i mean turning the key on halfway waiting for the light to go out then turning it back off repeating then turning the key to turn the motor over

your losing prime could be crossover tube o-rings, could be the fuel return line on the back of the head loose getting air in the system. park the truck nose facing down hill if the truck doesn't have hard starting issue it's the crossover tube o-rings

But the real question is it an actual lose of prime? I've gone over the truck and cant see any noticeable leaks, i guess its possible that its in the cross over tubes, but what has me stumped, is why does it only do it in the summer and not winter? I'm gonna replace this relay and see if it fixes the issue, its bad anyways. But i can sit there and crank on the truck and while its cranking im getting white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I dont see how a motor getting that much fuel isnt firing. :ouch:
