Need info on oil and filters

Im due for an oil change on my 2001 cummins.

Ive never changed it on this truck an was wondering what kind of oil you all are running in your trucks? What brand?

Also what weight fluid in your rear differential?

Also what brand oil filters?

And lastly what filters do i need for the airdog fuel system?

Thank you.

I've always ran shell rotella in my diesels I may switch after I use these last few gallons though. Haven't picked out a filter yet though

i run rotella in my ford also, i like it. how come your going to switch?

and also need to know what weight fluid for rear differential. any ideas? :ouch:

1999stroker 10-08-2012 08:13 AM

Pretty sure it's all 80 90 and of you have a limited slip diff you need the additive. Switching so I can go longer between change intervals.

What are u switching to?

RanchhandTCR 10-08-2012 07:55 PM

I run Mystick Syntetic Blend, or rotella T it depends if I make it far enough to buy the mystic oil. I run the Napa Filters which are either fleetguard or Baldwin Filters, I buy them when the store here has their filter sale and can Get them for 4 bucks instead of 13 bucks a piece, and I change My oil at 5000k and its 80-90. Make sure when you refeill the diff that you jack oneside of the truck up a bit so you fill the axel wells.

wilke12V 10-08-2012 09:42 PM

i run rotella-t 15-40 for oil in mine and i run donaldson filters for oil and my airdog, and 80-90 in the diffs ^^^^def gotta tip the axles :tu:

Ltk 10-08-2012 10:52 PM

Ok ill just stick with the rotella like i do in the ford.

Tip the axles side to side? Or front to back?

Are the airdog filters any better? Or are there exact filters?

luke46 10-08-2012 11:04 PM

A lot of folks I know run the valvoline blue15w40 it's indorsed by cummins? anyone else. Does anyone run the mopar filters? For my rear I get one side higher over fill a little spin the diff good by hand refill drive a lap around my house re check.

RanchhandTCR 10-08-2012 11:41 PM

Yep, just jack up one side so its higher than the other, then drive a lap, and check it and you should be good. Ive heard good things about valveoline. You can but the Blue Rotela T6 I ve heard goodthings about it! but its pricey..

wilke12V 10-08-2012 11:55 PM

Can you put a price on what's protecting your investment? Lol that's just how i was raised.

Ltk 10-08-2012 11:57 PM

ok ill make sure to do that. my buddy owns a shop, so i just go borrow his rack from time to time. gotta re-tighten my e-brake also... my dumbass drove through a parking lot with it on and when i shifted gears it kicked really hard... thats when i noticed the light on :ouch:

diesel life 10-09-2012 07:31 AM

i run rotella 15-40 and a k&n oil filter......:tu:

blacksally 10-09-2012 08:16 AM

i work at a ford dealership and i use the 15W40 motorcraft oil and a wixs filter and winter we run the 10w30 diesel oil i only gotta buy the filter oils free

Heath 10-09-2012 10:13 AM

Lots of variety out there. :tu:

1999stroker 10-09-2012 10:54 AM

Just changed mine with a purolater gold filter

H.R.D 10-09-2012 12:18 PM

I run fleetguard oil filter and Rotella T.

Bryce 10-09-2012 04:07 PM

I run Rotella T6 5w40 full synthetic and Donaldson ELF7349 filter and go 10k miles between changes. The donaldson filter has the best ratings of any filter available for our trucks. Efficiency is 99% at 15 microns and 50% at 7 microns. Truckhelp.com has the best price on them but you have to buy $50 worth of stuff to get free shipping. I run mobil 1 gear lube in the diffs. If your airdog is running through the stock filter housing get a Baldwin pf7777 fuel filter.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Whatever oil you use just make sure it is approved for use in diesels. I went over to my parents one day, my dad was finishing up an oil change on his 03 cummins and I noticed some empty jugs of 5w40 mobil 1 for gas engines. We did another oil change.

Ltk 10-09-2012 07:54 PM

Ill stick with rotella and for the fuel fiters should i go with the 2 micron or the 10 micron airdog filter?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I changed dads oil on his 1500 silverado, and put a couple quarts of 15w40 in it but thankfully i didnt put more! That crap is expensive

Bryce 10-09-2012 08:41 PM

You want the 2 micron. You'll have to change it a little more often but it will filter the smaller particles

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Or you could get the 10 micron and get a remote filter kit. Install it after your airdog and put a Cat 2 micron filter on it. That way you're not clogging the 2 micron as quick and the Cat's are cheaper than the airdog filters.

Ltk 10-09-2012 09:56 PM

So just put a cat 2 micron filter instead?

Bryce 10-09-2012 10:24 PM

Cat 1R-0751 filter will fit on the airdog but you will have to grind part of the bracket on the pump as the cat is slightly bigger than the airdog filters. I suggest you get the airdog 10 micron filter to put on the pump and then buy a remote filter housing, install it between the vp and the airdog, and put a 2 micron cat filter there.

Ltk 10-09-2012 10:35 PM

So if i dont do all that, and i just get the airdog filter, should i get the 10 or the 2?

Bryce 10-09-2012 10:54 PM

I'd get the 2.

blacksally 10-10-2012 12:22 AM

i got a water fuel separater and made my own spin on filter on my powerstroke b.c i ran alot of used filter trans fluid it was a cool set up and i had all the shop guys with psd soin it lol hahahahahaha but as soon as i can im getting a fass 150

diesel life 10-16-2012 08:30 AM

I have been heard that you are supposed to run a 2 micron in the summer and a 10 micron in the winter.....???? dont know if thats totally true or not but thats what ive done since my airdog has been in and had no issues... i always buy airdog replacement filters:tu:

Ltk 10-16-2012 08:36 AM

After changing filters on the airdog do i prime it a couple times before starting just like i normally do when changing fuel filters normally? Never dealt with the airdog, was on truck when i bought it.

RanchhandTCR 10-16-2012 10:33 AM

Yea, your gonna have fun reprimeig the cummins, Im not familiar with the ari dog system but I would crack injection lines 1,3,4 untill you get fuel then close them back up and start the truck its gonna run rough for a minute, but hop in the truck and bring the rpms up to 1200 for a couple of minutes and your set!! just make sure your injection lines are tight enough over a good snug will be good 18ftlbs..

Farmboy 2.0 10-16-2012 01:04 PM

I use the Highest Napa Filter, Wix, or Fleetguard depending on where im at when i need a filter. I run either Champion Blue Flame oil or Schaffers Full Synthetic in the engine. And everything else is Schaeffers in the Axles, T-Case, Trans

oneil250 10-16-2012 03:10 PM

I like the Rotella 5W40 syn, and run a Donaldson oil filter. From what Ive read and heard, theyre are both very good. Expensive, but not as bad as changing my tranny fluid. I have the NV4500, just did a fluid change. Big $$$$ for that shit!!:dang:

Fill the filter and water seperator (if you change the WS) up with fuel before placing them back on the pump. Then bump the starter but don't start and let the system prime until it stops then fire it up. No need to crack lines. :c:

RanchhandTCR 10-16-2012 05:42 PM

Ive never had luck with just change and prime!!! but I got the old, stock filter housing...

Ltk 10-16-2012 08:58 PM

how often should i change the water separator?

so i just spin them off, let fuel pour into new ones, then spin back on? and what do you mean by bump the starter. just turn key shortly but dont let it start?

im not the smartest :ouch:

RanchhandTCR 10-16-2012 11:07 PM

Get some diesel into a can and fill the filters that way, and yes just bump the ingnition really fast and let go.. do not start, waterseperator should be done every time you change your filters...

Ltk 10-17-2012 11:17 AM

Ok well fuel filters are gettin changed every 10-15k miles usually. Im just gonna orderthem from airdog, and as for oil ill probably stick with rotella

alittle5150 10-24-2012 12:18 AM

what type of oil ?

I use Amsoil 15w40 ... it works real good .... I use the severe gear 75w110 Amsoil I get it about 6 bucks cheaper than sta-lube fully sythetic 75w90...:tu:
ALSO THE TBN LEVEL IS 12.... INSTEAD OF ROTELA WHICH IS 10.6... just sayin
