P pump on a 24 valve???

Will a p pump work on a 99 24 valve 5 spd manual...if so what do I need to do...and what would you set timing at? At highway speed(with camper hotshot driver) the truck will be fine running good then all of a sudden it will get a lot of power then will loose it and get a knocking noise. I have replace the lift pump, injector pump and fuel filter. Any ideas?( Dodge said to put on an injector pump so I put a used one on and it made no difference)

yeah you can

A P-Pump will work, but it's a lot of work. Time and money are huge contributors to a swap.
Do you have any codes? This could be a simple sensor issue, like the APPS.

po216 is the code that its throwing

p0216

P0216 Injection Timing Control Circuit Malfunction

Could be your injection pump, or a computer.

late4_supper 08-13-2012 02:54 PM

could bad injectors cause that code?

RAW 08-13-2012 03:00 PM

Not likely, as the injector follow what the pump does. The injectors have no control over themselves, so to speak.

yeah but this truck sat for over 8 months before i bought it just replaced the injector pump last month so i was thinking that the injectors could be plugged...the truck had some top engine noise but it went away...just drove it over 600 miles and it didn't make it again...just trying to figure it out without dumping more money into it

The 216 code means the vp44 is done. It can't be anything else. The p-pump swap as Ryan said is labor intensive and requires alot of money and some custom fab work, for a daily driver truck what it would cost you doesn't outweigh the benefits- considering the pump alone can run you damn near $1000... used. There's nothing wrong with a vp44 when the fuel system is upgraded and monitored properly. You said you replaced your vp but do you have fuel pressure gauge? upgraded lift pump? those are REQUIREMENTS for a vp truck or you'll burn pump after pump.

VP pumps suck... compared to the P pumps...

But if you skip the comparison these pumps do what they have to do...run out of fuel often and they will burn up and die...

These pumps are used on the BMW M51 motors, and they will get f'cked up if they run out of fuel often... lift pumps on BMWs are seldom problematic...

But as empty wallet stated... put on a Air Dog and fuel pressure gauges.... and keep an eye out... get a new VP44... preferrably a rebuilt one... chances are the used one you got was no better than the one you took off...
