Where to put my money.

If I buy this truck: 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 | ksl.com
What mods do i put on it first and in what order.
Give me a list i could do one at a time over a long period of time. because i dont have the money to blow all at once.

Your input will be greatly appreciated.:tu:

First take it to a tranny shop a reputable one, have the bands tightened, filter changed and new fluid n gasket. Then if that checks out gauges boost pyrometer fuel pressure trans temp, diy intake, next a lift pump airdog or Fass 150 if its a 24 valve can't tell, then a programmer if 24 valve, that's a good start. Also have the front end checked if you don't k le how replace worn parts dodges are notorious for sloppy front ends.

I know that the truck has gauges. he says it has a new front end. it is a 24 valve what are some good programmers. it has an edge ez. Then what thanks for your input.

If it has gauges her set there. Next is have the trasmisson checked out, them exhaust and intake if not done already, then a lift pump first if he doesn't have one already, then a programmer as I stated in my first post like a Smarty, edge drag comp with hot unlock are your best bet if it already has gauges, now if you want to ditch the gauges and go to a monitor the quad adrenaline with pulse v2 or edge cs pr cts with attitude.

$240 is what I have been paying for a flush with synthetic oil and tune up.

Thank you

As stated above, a lift pump is very important if you don't have one already. $500 now saves $1000+ down the road, plus less down time.

Edge Comp is a great fueling box, but has no features. Edge Drag Comp is the unlock version, with a little extra power thrown into the 5th level. If you want features, back downs, turbo timer, gauges, etc, then I would suggest an Edge Juice with Attitude (EJWA) CS or CTS. Edge has excellent customer service.

So, fuel system, trans tune up, programmer/chip, and then you get into more money and more power. You'll need to dump more into that auto to make it hold though. A torque converter and valve body are the minimum, and a full rebuilt the better option. Problem is, that full rebuild stickers around $4500.

Depending on your goals depends on the modifications.

Do you guys think the tranny will be ok? if i get it tuned up and serviced? i have patients i will wait for another truck that is a manual. dont wanna waste my money on a truck that wont be able to handle mods without a 5k dump into a new tranny...

RanchhandTCR 07-31-2012 06:06 PM

Autos are nicer when it come to draggin in my oppinion, It was 300 for me to get new fluid, flush for my tranny and t-case, I like manuels, but I have yet to regret my auto, you can still break a manuel with to much power and end putting in money for a clutch and so on, as long you dont try to make a stock tranny take on 500 horse you will be ok, I had a buddy with a 12 valve with around 500 horse and that tranny got toasted, but Its is very hard to find a manuel in good shape, just when you go to try out the truck just take it to some one reputable and have it checked out, and drive it around and see how it shifts. If you want major horse power you gonna dump major money into everything, the engine and the tranny, but if you spend 5K on a tranny you are set, just keep up maintaince, but if you just lookin for a lil power then I wouldent worry to much, I talked to Raw a while back about programmers and the Comp box sounds nice, but I dont want nothing huge, so I plan on the Edge Ez and eventually some 40 horse injectors, I would not put 1000 HP injectors, and do they even exsist, I know they stop at 100-200 hp then it just nozzle size. But, Make sure the tranny good, and if it is, dont worry just keep in mind if you want serious power, then you need a serious tranny, But this is where I put my money first, Guages, Tranny, Intake (Still needing to do that) Exhaust, I just hacked the ole muffler off and bought a 3 inch pipe beveled so it slides right over the exsisting pipe and welded it on, (Gained 2 MPG Highway) Exhaust Manifold I have a DPS Manifold and No regrestsm and if you live where its cold, Id get your PCM programmed for winter Mine is Programmed for High Idle after 10 Degrees and 3 Cyl Warm UP at -25 nice warms the truck up fast. Then after all is said and done get into the mod's Chip, Fuel Systems the goodies.. Have fun and keep the questions comming, and if I catch you smoking in my town I will install a Diesel Particlant Filter on you truck while yousleeping.. :bat: But keep up the questions dont mind helping ya, but like I said take the truck you looking at to a reputable trannsmission shop and get er checked out.

Other Things to look for.

Front End Cover for Oil
Oil Pan gasket.
Inspection Gasket on the Driver Side behind the Injection Pump
Rear Main
Pinon Seal
Axel Seals
U Joints.
When you get it I highly suggest Performing Valve Lash.

Nice truck, just don't fool yourself into thinking a manual is bulletproof. find out about fuel system upgrades, etc it doesn't have any listed.

RanchhandTCR 07-31-2012 08:03 PM

Your willing to spend 300 on an OEM bumper, if you do that make you own. Idk bout that second truck looks nice, alot of milage and alot of money for it, but looks clean on the outside. up to you man, I still would try to snag number two did he send any pics of the engine compartment. to me the bumper not the end of the world. Espicially if you get a deal like I did bought this bumper for two hundred cash, And gave the guy my oem bumper. Look at LMC Truck bet its alot cheaper.
