My dad has an 89' and i have a 91 for some reason his turns off when you go in reverse at first i was like oh well not my truck not my problem but today mine did it so now im concerned whats causing it to shut off ?!?!?!

 

Check the connections to the fuel shutoff solenoid. Mine was doing this too a few years ago and that's what it was for my truck.
