A Newbie Looking To Modify
I am a newbie here, the rough equivalent of a small child when it comes to diesel. Here's my present situation: I recently bought a Bounder motorhome with a 1993 Cummins 5.9L, 190hp. 67,000 miles. Allison trans (although this one lacks a lock-up). Everything is original. This is a 12-valve, totally mechanical setup. This a rear-engine configuration, with a mechanical fan pushing air through the inner cooler and radiator. The weight of the motorhome is 14,000lbs dry, and around 16,500lbs loaded. 190hp is, I think, a bit thin for this load.
First point: The engine will overheat while climbing out of the valleys in southern California on summer days. I've had the radiator scrubbed and the thermostat changed. Still will overheat while climbing. Water pump has not been changed; I'm inclined to look for a high-flow pump, and add an additional, electric, pulling fan behind the radiator. What's a good choice for a high-flow water pump? Would an additional help much, or would the high-flow pump be sufficient?
Second point: I'd like to boost the output a bit. The usual things are to change the exhaust manifold and modify the charger? Thoughts on simple things to do?

Check out the sticky on tuning the ve pump, there are some very easy ways to make more power. My favorite improvement so far is the 3200 rpm governor spring (stock is 2700). You'll want to fix your cooling problem first, any more power will probably make that worse. The electric fan sounds like a good idea to me, fyi while towing my pick up truck will get up to the 2/3 hot line on the stock gauge, and I understand that's pretty common. I'm curious though because I ran into an '93 industrial engine recently that actually had the p-7100 pump on it, considering the 190hp rating could yours be one of these?
