i need a cummins mechanic. oh & sum 1 to go racing with

Hey: i need a gr8 cummins mechanic down here in the Newport richey, Tampa area, motor only starts with starter fluid, & Turbo has no sound to it at all, even when towing About 2000 lbs. Turbo has a little play from side to side but not in & out. Truck has no gauges 4 boost, egg, fuel pressure. My dad is 84 & had some 1 work on the truck, did not run all that better when we got it bk,looking 4 the paperwork on what they did to it,but they went out of business. Any help would b greatly appreciated!! How do u get to the Badlands on here? Ill try to get on here asap when I can.. 2 c where 2 take truck.

Go to the main page n scroll to the bottom, you'll find the badlands there. Sounds like maybe you have a bad lift pump. These trucks will run without a lp and without the turbo so that's my guess.

Thanks 1stgenblowingsmoke: all I got 2 do now is find a GD cummins Mechanic down here in Tampa, Newport richey, springhill Florida area. The truck is used for towing, the racing is done with my car. Not that I wouldn't mind the truck being alot quicker though.lol.. Ttyl

Cummins mechanic for what?

ursoslw4me 04-25-2012 06:20 PM

For my truck, I know nothing about diesels. Can't afford to do something wrong to the truck.. or I would try to fix it.

diezeldick 04-25-2012 07:47 PM

the first gen cummins are proly the easiest thing to work on aside of your lawnmower man and these guys on here will help you every step of the way

ursoslw4me 04-25-2012 08:08 PM

Yeah, seems like some very knowledgeable people on here..just would like someone to show me & tell me the rt way to do what needs to b done so I don't mess it up worse. Its hard because I do not have any gauges to see what's going on, & have no manual to refer to look at to even point me in the rt direction. I do not get much time to research after work & everything .. hopefully sum 1 knows sum 1 here in Florida close by that I can see about truck problems. & hopefully learn About the motor etc..

why is it that everyone who is a so call "diesel mechanic" knows absolutley nothing about these old ve 12 valves? every diesel shop in my area acts like they r so hard to work on and that the p pump is so much easier why is that?

turbo2332 04-28-2012 08:06 AM

the p pump is a 12 valve??? just a different pump, very suttle differences

Cummins12Club 04-28-2012 08:54 AM

rite, but the shops were refferning to ve pump being much harder to work on than the p pumps, just talking pumps here not the engine is self

turbo2332 04-28-2012 09:31 AM

hu?? wonder why way more room under the 1st gens hood

ursoslw4me 04-28-2012 09:48 AM

6bt 5.9 cummins. Took it to the shops, 1said it was the glowplugs, & said they r under each valve cover. 2nd shop said 1 injector was leaking & could b the reason for the hard starting. 3rd shop said maybe injection pump is wrong pump or sum 1 put it in wrong, something about the timing of it, they drove the truck said its only making about 40% power, all 3 shops did not hookup anything to truck, just looked under the hood, last shop drove it & said it would probably b a couple hundred to fix, saying they might have to send injectors out for testing, & hook a boost gauge to Turbo, where r the glow plugs on this kinda motor? Is there any1 on this site who knows a gr8 diesel mechanic down here??? I can't afford to get my azz ripped off again. The last place my dad gave em $1400 to put in new injection pump & they went out of business. & truck still never fired up or ran rt.

turbo2332 04-28-2012 09:57 AM

THESE TRUCKS DONT HAVE GLOW PLUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is a grid heater under tha intake horn with 2 large wires going to it. you dont need it in FLORIDA. its already hot. lol

the men you are working with are IDIOTS other then possible the shop that said timing was the issue. what is your truck doing any white smoke that could def be your problem

ursoslw4me 04-28-2012 10:27 AM

That is what I was thinking,lol.. u might need the heater grid in the winter down here when it gets in the 20s & 30s, but that is not many days..it smokes grey everyonce in awhile, but other than that not really. I need to find a GD Mechanic close by.who's not going 2 rip my azz off.:argh:

92betsy 04-28-2012 12:21 PM

I haven't had my grid heaters hooked up in about 2 years and it get pretty dang cold here in northern utah. Never had a starting issue.

1stgenblowingsmoke 04-28-2012 08:58 PM

If I remember right the grids won't come on unless below 25*F. I think it's more a lift pump problem. There's a mechanical lever on the side of the lift pump on the motor. see if there's any pressure needed to push it down after it's been sitting a while.

Yeah Betsy & blowing smoke. Its definitely not cold down here, there is a lever like thing on what looks like on the fuel pump,I pushed it down like 30 x & it did not feel any different from the 1st couple of times I pushed it down, truck still did not start after doing that? Only with starting fluid starts it. 1 Guy said do not use starting fluid!! He said use silicone spray instead. I just nd a GD Mechanic by me 2 take a look at this truck & fix it 4 me, or show me how to fix it & I will try. I just can't afford to get my azz ripped off again or mess the truck up more. I appreciate all of ur help so far.. :)

Okay. was there any pressure on the lever like if you press it down n let go does it come right back up on it's own.

The reason starting fluid is not recommended on these trucks is the grid heaters. They can cause pre-ignittion with starting fluid. If you need to use starting fluid unplug atleast 1 of the small wires on each your grid heater solonoids first so they won't come on. The wts light will kick on but the actual grids won't.

wish I could make it to florida for ya man... It sound like a possibility of the pump being out of time.... good possibility infact....... the injector...UUUhhhh it would just smoke more and be a little hard to start but not too bad... your fuel setting could be too low as well which would starve the motor of fuel...... the turbo having play is not a good thing to hear either... probably gonna need to invest in a turbo as well.... hows your fuel filter ?? how long has it been since its been replaced ??
