smoke ??

Guys I have just finished up on a swap for my new to me tow rig. I have put the 89 model dodge 5.9 cummins into an 86 2wd gmc four door dually. I used the getrag that came with the parts truck I bought. Turbo I ran across a deal on the banks exhaust brake,turbo and down pipe off of a 02 or 03 model. Intercooler is off of a 94 and up body. My oe pump was pouring like a sieve when parts truck was purchased, when got the swap close enough to start the leaks were worse. I had bought another 89 chassis for parts engine had a cracked head. Used the pump from that engine, now when my engine is running the smoke at idle is really bad and the raw fuel smell is loud. How much boost pressure should I see at idle? Could an injector be hanging from sitting? Timing be off on pump where it was replaced? Also lost the lift pump, currents has a small green mr gasket electric lift pump on it right now. thanks

The raw fuel smell is loud ? WTF ?

what color smoke is it? black white or blue. timing or a really screwed up injector is white along with water. blue is engine oil being burnt, you will probably have a much of blow by too and black is just too much damn fuel. you should see absolutly NO boost at idle. even when reving it up bubcus. you might tickle the needle if you rev it way up real fast but it will just be a tickle.

loud = strong.

thanks turbo, the smoke is a whitish color. Removing the oil fill cap reveals no blowby. I think the timing is off some on the engine due to the pump swap. I'm working on wiring in the alternator right now and a few more things to be able to drive it some and load the engine to see if it clears up. thanks again

i would def lean towards timing with whitish smoke. don beat on her to hard if things arnt right.

Not all ve pumps are timed the same. There are multiple timing marks on the gear and u must be using the correct one for the pump u have or it wil run bad. As I understand all dodge pumps were the same, but if someone changed one of urs to some other application pump u may need to move the pump gear to the correct mark for it to work.

I moved the timing up on the pump some today seems to have helped it out alot. I will tidy things up to be able to drive it some and see what happens. I ran it out my lane and driveways to my house and shop power seems to be good. thanks for the help
