518 problem has me baffled
On Old Paint's maiden voyage, one problem surfaced. Although the tranny was rebuilt before I got it, the torque convertor is behaving oddly. After driving for twenty miles or so, the torque convertor acts like a lock-up convertor that won't release! It nearly stalls the engine at traffic lights and strains to take off with NO slippage at all! Goes through the gears like a stick shift - bang-bang-bang. The under-frame cooling fan is running strong, the fluid looks good -red, not brown, and doesn't smell burnt. I put it in neutral at stops, and drop it in drive when I go. After cooling down for ten minutes, it's back to normal for another twenty miles. On the highway, I never notice a problem because the TC isn't called upon to slip.
Any sage advice forthcoming?
