Broken turbo, H1C

My brother in law was supposed to rebuild a turbo for me, he ended up breaking the damn shaft on one end. He took it to a shop(who'd a thunk it?) he's supposed to be a diesel tech....

They quoted him $400 to repair it, reusing the one shaft that's not broken.

I'm wondering what, if any options I've got keeping in mind that budget and reliability are the driving factors over performance.

I seen some cxracing h1c's on ebay, but haven't a clue if they are garbage or not, used ones are around but seem high and may not be much better than this one?

Open to suggestions, but I need them quickly as this truck needs to go back together shortly. Also, a marine HG and upgraded allen bolts are just going on if it makes a difference, stock fueling though.

if you plan to keep stock fueling you can buy an hx35 for way under 400 bucks, i got one for 150 that was recentley rebuilt, or if you r ready for more performance, id buy an hx40 they are in the $400 and less range and will give you a world of difference w power, just my two cents

reusing the one shaft that isn't broke? They only have one. Good grief. Let me guess, he turned the left handed nut the wrong way. Make sure you find a turbo configured for a diesel, gassers are set up different even if they say H1C or HX35.

He wasn't turning the nut the wrong way, he had directions on it and had been soaking in for a few days in penetrant. Not sure if he's used heat on it or not to be honest, but despite the shaft being broke it's still stuck and he's afraid he'll break more parts trying to press it out.

I apologize for being ignorant on how exactly turbo's are assembled, I have a rough mental picture, not rocket science I don't believe but not something I've ever worked with either.

Thanks for the advice thus far I do appreciate it. Looks like an H1C for a diesel, or an hx35 could work. I'm not going to go bigger than that as the injection pump probably needs rebuilt as it is, so I'm not going to be messing with it for a while anyhow.
