Truck running Rough

Just got back from tennesse in my truck about 600 miles round trip ran great on the way there had a quarter of tank of fuel filled up 22 gallons and hauled a car trailer and s10 chevy back truck ran great as i pulled onto my road i got on her a bit nothing to hard and then it started running ruff like i have air in the lines or something but i still have a little below a half tank. would appreciate any incite for tomorrows trouble shooting. Fuel pump? injector pump? Takes forever to start it and then it will not idle you have to keep it running.

Check the easy first, if you got a bad fillup change your fuel filter and prime it with seafoam then dump the rest of the can in the tank.

:argh: seafoam that's a way to fix it. I'd at least find out if I had bad fuel before just pouring in seafoam. Checking the filter is a good start and also the left pump. You still have the factory left pump?

Filter is first on the list, Then i'm going to try new fuel run it out of a can after reprimeing the pump and just work my way back to lift pump and hope its not the injection pump:argh:

Mabey the right pump.

Heres the order of the stuff I would check.

1. Wire to shut off solenoid. The connection can wiggle loose from vibrations.

2. Change fuel filter. I would also dump the fuel out of it into a clear container to check for water.

2a. Check o-rings around the fuel heater for leaks. The best thing to do is just get the filter stud off an 8.3, that does away with the heater.

3. Check fuel pressure.

4. Replace lift pump if its been on there more than a couple years even if the fuel psi is good. Cheap insurance.

5. If none of the above has worked gut the shutdown solenoid. If it still runs bad then run fuel straight to the ip.

Well drained the filter no water, ran a hose to fresh fuel that i normally get reprimed everything bled the injectors and she runs good. Fuel pump pulsates as it runs maybe normal but going to get the piston still low pressure pump just to be sure. moral is watch where you fill up i guess. That fuel smelled like it had gas in it but it looked identical to the fuel i normally get, i wonder if the cetane is to low in it and it is reall old fuel? draining tank now

if it smells like gas git rid of it quick it probly ate the lift pump so you will need a new one filler up and dump half gallon of motor oil 10-40 works fine the additives in the oil will help neutralize the octane in whats left of the gas

Well truck is back together and running as good as before but still concerned about lift pump damage so this weekend going to put a holley blue or black electronic pump on there as they are regulated at 14 psi so is not to hurt the IP.

jwirth 10-11-2011 08:36 PM

Warning on the Holley pump. I put one on my truck lasted 3 months and about 4000 miles. Go with a good airdog or fass and be done with it.
