power upgrade recommendations

Here's the scenario. I am installing a 91 intercooled waste gated 5.9 in my 85 ford F350 4x4:humm: and want to boost the power a little but don't want to go crazy. I don't need big power for what I am doing with my truck, I want reliability and good fuel milage so if I can achieve 200-225hp and 450-500 on the torque I think that would work for me. My truck will have 3.55 gears with a NV4500 trans. I have read a lot of on bumping the power but not sure which route to take. do I turn the pump up a little and go with better injectors, swap out the H1C turbo for a larger unit, there are so many different things to do. I will be going with the 3 piece exhaust manifold and have a 4" exhaust system. I also have to buy an intercooler and was reading in the stickys from NadirPoint about installing an I/C in his dodge and was wondering what year ford I/C that was??? I am building from scratch so might as well do it right the 1st time.. Thanks for any suggestions and help...

fuel pin and gov. spring, swap out your turbo for an HX35 off a 2nd gen. that will prolly get you where you want to be. injectors would be next but for what you are looking for not needed. and fix the KDP

6BT-F350 09-18-2011 08:57 PM

Already have the front of motor apart and taken care of the KDP. kinda easy when motor is on engine stand... Thanks for info....

t-bone117yamaha 09-19-2011 02:15 PM

well, no matter what you do to it it will still be better then the stroke that was there before, way more reliable and way better fuel milage if you have the right gearing anyways

6BT-F350 09-19-2011 07:16 PM

My truck was a 85 F250 351 windsor powered 4 speed w/granny gear no O.D. gas guzzlin pig, kinda guttless and junk front IFS.. I'll fix that...

justanother92 09-19-2011 10:10 PM

So why does your sig say 350 then? And power stroke didnt come in a ford untill 94.5.

6BT-F350 09-20-2011 06:11 AM

Truck was a F250 but now has all F350 axles and springs, upgraded to a 1 ton from a 3/4. The available diesel motor option in 85 was the 6.9 IH non turbo but mine was a gas 351...

pyro gauge, fuel psi gauge, 60mm GDS , 16cm housing, crank up the pump in every way, 3 in cooler tubes, P/S intercooler, lift pump upgrade, some good injectors, timming bump.

$1,000- $1,500 should do it.

Which is preferable regarding turbo's? Keeping the H1C but upgrading to the 60mm GDS, 16cm housing or swapping out the turbo for an HX35 off a 2nd gen with a 12 cm housing.

1STGENFARMBOY 09-20-2011 03:58 PM

If your gona change turbos get an HX 40, i don't think a 35 is much more than a 56mm wheel with a 14cm housing, it's not much of an upgrade for cool air for shure, i think they run better with a 35 but pretty hot.

The 60mm blows more/cooler air and with a 16 or 14 housing you have a pretty good turbo.

this is all my oppinion by the way, and some of my figgers are a bit cloudy.

Thanks for all the advice. Since I already have a 14cm waste gated exhuast housing just gonna go with a 60mm compressor, a set of injectors, some pump tweekin, new aftermarket exhuast manifold and already have 4" exhaust system...:s:

don't rule out the P/S intercooler and the 3in cooler tubes thet Tim Worline makes.

they will help a ton in keeping the EGT's cool when towing.

yep the P/S imtercooler and 3 in tubes mean more air into the ole girl

1STGENFARMBOY 09-24-2011 10:28 PM

Go ahead and do a 366 spring also it's a cheep upgrade and will let your pump fuel all the way up to 32-3600 rpm's. (better top end). $20.00 or so.

you don't need to crank the star wheel down or the smoke screw in all the way. (this only makes her smoke in a low boost excelleration and with a 5 spd in will be worse).

you can play with them after your done with your mods and find the sweet spot, thats called tuneing your AFC.

more smoke is (NOT) more power on a street truck.

The 60MM wheel and a set of 90hp SDX or LBD sticks with the pumpupgrades and a 3600 spring makes for a real nice streetable truck dont waste the money for a P/S IC or cooler tubes or exhaust manifold now to all you other guys I do not oppose those items but for a mild expensive street truck those things to not give the bang for your buck like other items unless there free lol

now if you want a street/strip truck or a dyno queen then i fully recommend those things

we can make a 1st gen run like a striped ape with pump tuning, 366 spring, mild injectors, turbo up grade or a HX35/40, timing, BHAF intake, exhaust, and a set of 60lb springs for about 1200 bucks that will make you smile, beat most all ricers, and tow like a dream, with LITTLE TO NO SMOKE which seems to be the big issue these days with all these kids running around wanting to make there trucks smoke like trains and what not

thats my $.02 some will agree some wont

Thanks for all the great advice.. I haven't bought the aftermarket exhaust manifold yet but have heard so much about the stock one cracking and breaking studs and for the I/C I dont have that either so that is on my shopping list also. I liked the ford power stroke I/C, looked like it may be easy to mount with the cast on ears.
I want good reliable power but not crazy power and sure dont want roll the coal as they say..
I like that phrase from Big bad diesel DYNO QUEEN. Cracked me up...:c:

johnnyreb 09-25-2011 09:04 AM

I hear ya brother, the dyno queen was cute. My old girl was used and abused by me for years till I came here. Mine is a DD and towing rig. i'm slowly making mods to improve that without killing my mpg or rolling coal. I plan to install a larger turbo, I/C and tubes in hopes to help with my EGT's. Although I will build my 4" exhaust first. I already have the BHAF.

1STGENFARMBOY 09-25-2011 04:28 PM

For anybody that cares about towing EGT's ( I tow heavy and DD)

My truck could melt a turbo ( 1600* was just a mile post on the way up) God only knows how high it would go, untill i did the 60mm, P/S intercooler, and 3 inch cooler tubes and it cut 300-350* off my max EGT.

thats an inpressive amount in my book, and 1200* is all i can get out of it, now i don't even look at my pyro anymore.

how much weight you hauling farmboy? I'm not usually over 8,000 lbs. But I would like to include a turbo upgrade, p/s intercooler and 3" tubes on my list. Are you still running the stock exhaust rotor or did you go with a smaller size (16, 14, 12)?

1STGENFARMBOY 09-26-2011 04:46 PM

I noticed the biggest drop when pulling 18,000 lbs, but i lost 150* just crusin down the road. I have a 16cm housing, 4 inch DP to 5 inch exaust.
