valve adjustment

How much am i lookin to pay for an adjustment?

justanother92 08-20-2011 08:17 AM

Well i wouldnt think very much. its not very hard just a matter of getting valve covers off and probably putting new gaskets on= 50 bucks. And then setting the engine and adjusting accordingly. I would say no more than $ 100 bucks including new gaskets if they are still around that price.

well gaskets ain't but a year old...prolly can't convince the shop to leave em tho. thanks thats kinda what i would think. 1hr. labor @75-90$

I would have to know the mechanic... I wouldn't trust a typical automotive mechanic under the age of 40 with knowing how to use a feeler gauge. Not the normal operation.

It definitely shouldn't take longer than an hour, unless something's really buggered up.

Last I checked Cummins Southern Plains charged $125 for a valve adjustment. I would trust cummins before I trusted anybody else with my engine.

ya i ain't gunna take it to any random place that is for sure. nothin messed up with the ol dodge....its got 135k now and as far as i know it never has had an adjustment. previous owner wrote down anything and everything that was done to the truck so....pretty sure it needs one. with the ol hood stack i can hear it if i am goin down a hill and let off it enough but not all the way.

thanks fellas

It would take more time to drive somewhere leave it and wait for them to do it then go pick it up, than to do it yourself.

I am curious about the 24k miles adjustment interval stated by Cummins. I wonder how many planned on doing this every 24k only to check and find them still spot on at .10 and .20?

NadirPoint 08-21-2011 12:50 PM

When I first checked mine at 50k three were at .010/.020 and three were at .008/.018. I don't know how they do it at the factory, but that could have been due to just human error. I set the 1st three down to .008/.018 so they'd all match.

The truck just went over 100k last week, so they are due for a check. We'll see...

Good to know. I would imagine if your gap got too wide you would have started to hear some ticking noise. Well, maybe not with all the other rattling and noise under the hood?

NadirPoint 08-21-2011 12:57 PM

They can wear in or out, depending on how you use the truck.
