Default A/C Compressor coil / clutch pack removal

The coil on my A/C compressor went out and I had no luck locating another coil. So I bought a rebuilt A/C compressor. I'm thinking about removing the coil from the rebuilt A/C compressor and putting it on the old compressor since it's still good. Is it correct that the freon does not need to be removed to do this job? I'm getting conflicting answers but the A/C shop did tell me that it can be done on the vehicle with it being charged.

Yes it can be done on the vehicle without recovering the freon.

It was much easier to just remove the compressor and do the clutch / coil changeover on the bench. Afterwards, I refilled the system with R290 using a scale to get exactly the correct amount. The A/C now runs extremely cold and will drive you out of the vehicle even when it's 100 degrees outside.
