Anyone towing w/ Getrag???
Hey there, how well does the Getrag hold up while towing?? I've heard all the nasty stories about the Getrag and I did my research. I plan on rebuilding my 360 and adding the extra oil as needed. everyone seems to swear by them if built and maintained properly. Also wondering how much power they can handle. I don't plan on going over 400hp. I don't tow too often, maybe 5-10 times a year. But when I do tow it can get pretty heavy, close to 10,000lbs. I'm just wondering if anyone else tows like this and if their getrag holds up.. sorry this is so long. any help would be great. thanks yall

I have a rag and the nv4500 I like the rag all around better shifts better, and its QUIET
if anyone tells you that the rag is a POS they dont know shi* |
Yea dont listen to the nay sayers. I keep mine about 1 qaurt over fill and it works fine. And i do tow some to, not very often though. My advice is dont tow heavy in 5th, it isnt a very strong gear for that kind of stuff.

I do. My only gripe is it is a long distance between 2nd and 3rd, specially with 3.07 gears. I run 5th on level ground, but when she starts to lug I drop it to 4th.

Keep it overfilled, stay out of 5th going heavy, don't lug it and you'll never have a problem. :tu:

Hey guys thanks a lot. I feel much better now. I hear all these bad rumors about these getrags, but I did some research, and A LOT of people said they love their getrag if you take care of it. I plan on rebuilding it and adding the extra quart. I feel assured after hearing first hand from you guys. thanks guys!!!

i tow with mine all the time, mostly in excess of 10000 pounds, but i have 4:10s and i use 5th on level and havent had a problem yet, just filled it with synthetic 1 quart over full and seems to hold up fine. My jump is between 3rd and 4th

i tow fairly regular with mine usually from 10 to 15k without a prob just towed a d4 without a hicup:rocking:

The Getrags don't handle 27,000 pounds worth a damned, even short term, but that's insane weight for a "light duty" transmission, anyway.
Trust me, an NV4500 is no better. Set up right, with the overfill, the getrags are a good tranny for towing under their rated GCVW of, IIRC, 18,000 pounds. If potential heat build-up bothers you, add PTO coolers to help cool the oil (nice for increasing capacity), don't hammer on it loaded, and it should last fine. Mark. |
hey guys thanks a lot for your posts. I feel a whole lot better about my getrag now. any updated parts I should look into before doing my rebuild. Other than the pto coolers (thanks Mark) any problems with input shafts like the nv4500??Thanks again everyone
