92 tranny problem

Default 92 tranny problem

Hey guys, I have a few questions about the tranny in my 92 dodge, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ok so I changed the fluid in the tranny and in my service manual it said to use dexron III.. So I did and it ran horrible, I drove it to the trans shop and they told me I needed ATF+4.. So I drained the oil and added new oil and now the trans feels a little sluggish and down on power. Could I have ruined the tranny by driving it to the shop? Also now when I put it into drive I get a little bang from the drive shaft..what would cause this? Trans was rebuilt at 125,000, truck now has 160,000..never had a problem with it till now...thanks again

sounds like a plugged filter, fresh trans fluid can wash alot of stuff that would have otherwise laid dormant into the pan/ filter. Dexron/mercon III is truthfully actually hard to find, its all "Mercon" (ford spec) fluid that serves the purpose of the Dexron. ATF+4 is meant for newer transmissons but works perfectly fine in the old ones, i actually believe Dodge has phased out Dexron III and substitutes it with ATF+4. Find a shop that can backflush your transmission with hot fluid and change your transmission filter. that should clean it out and loosen any other particles,sediment or varnish that could plug youre filter again. its cheaper than a trans rebuilt at any rate.

low on fluid or foamy fluid could cause all of the above too. i assume low quality fluid could cause foaming and being overfull is proven to cause foaming

Ok I will take your advice and do that, I should have taken it to the shop in the first place...I was just worried that I did some serious damage to the trans..I guess u live and learn..thanks again

well i've always heard "if your trans fluid hasnt been changed in forever... dont change it"
strictly because fresh fluid can knock alot of stuff loose and start causing problems, plugged fluid supply galley, return galley, no shift, slip; so on and so forwarth. back flushing should be able to solve these issue.

Yeah I hear that, no more tranny fluid changes 4 me... thanks for the help I will let u know how it turns out after I get it back flushed...

dont get me wrong, fluid changes arent a bad thing. sometimes more bad occurs before the good
