hx 35 turbo question

i have a hx 35 turbo on my 1990 dodge w350. it seems like it takes a while for it to spool up. would i be better off putting a wastegate on it or maybe putting a smaller housing on it. also how would i turn the boost up a little bit more without hurting anything. p.s this website has helped me out alot and i appreciate all the feed back, any kind of info that i can learn i will take advantage of.:tu:

What size housing do u have on it now?? hx35 came with 12cm housings mostly. automatic 24v engines came with 9cm housing. Possible boost leak or a exhaust leak pre-turbo that hindering ur spool?!

As mtk454ss said, I'd be looking for boost leaks before anything else. Also, how long since you changed/cleaned your air filter? You can get bigger compressor wheels for the '35 which will give you more boost. Go to the 'armory' on this site and the site vendors will help you out. I think Big Bad Diesel has some for a good price at the moment.
I'd be trying to find out why you have a lack of boost before upgrading though.

Pinching off the wastegate hose will increase your overall boost, but won't help spool up.

putting a wastegate on it will only stop the high boost, I have run the hx and the hy and they both spooled up fairly quick.and I dummped them at 35psi. like the others have said I would pressure check your intake. when did this happen, after you put the turbo on or one day it just felt slugish. good luck (gettin use to the power, time to buy a goodie) :choochoo::choochoo:

im still kind of learning as i go, is it marked on the turbo what size the housing is? as far as looking for the boost leaks what would be the best route to go about it. I had traded my other truck for this one. it had the hx35 turbo on it when we traded. i had also just recently put the intake on with a brand new filter.

ok here we go

1. To test for a boost leak the best way to test the whole system I have found is go get a 2.5in black pipe (sewer style) with a cap drill it for a male air compressor fitting and steal a air regulator off something to bring the PSI down then slide it in the 1st I/C boot and put the clamp on it and tighten down run it up to 20-30 PSI you will know if you have a major leak right off if not take soap and water and spray all connections a little bubble is normal these systems are not 100% tight

2. unless your running a modified HX35 it will have a wastgate on it if it dose not and it came off a P-Pumper then theres a good chance that it has a 16CM non W/G housing

3. as said above the wastgate (if applicable) can give you more boost if you pinch the line off but if you do you better have a boost gauge these things dont like anymore than 30-35

4. what is your boost psi now? and at what RPMS auto or manual?

5. whats done to the pump and dose the turbo clean up the smoke?

Try that and let us know the info above and we will go from there :tu:

a smaller housing will work wonders if its larger than 16, and to get more boost you need to put more fuel in the engine. Either by tuning the pump to what mods you have or larger injectors will get the job done. and get guages soon as they are a good investment, you can spend $500 on guages or melt your engine down and thats just a PITA
